18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, the Senate takes pleasure in recognizing those outstanding civic and |
---|
19 | 19 | | patriotic organizations and their members who work with purpose, commitment, and enthusiasm |
---|
20 | 20 | | to promote patriotism and preserve America's panoramic history and heritage; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, one such worthy organization is the Tennessee Society Sons of the |
---|
22 | 22 | | American Revolution (TNSSAR), founded in Nashville in December 1889, whose proud |
---|
23 | 23 | | members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Revolutionary War; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, TNSSAR seeks to perpetuate the ideals of the war for independence, |
---|
26 | 26 | | stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men and women who |
---|
27 | 27 | | achieved the independence of the American people; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, the exemplary community service undertaken by the members of TNSSAR |
---|
29 | 29 | | includes working with veterans hospitals; placing markers at Revolutionary War patriots' |
---|
30 | 30 | | gravesites; offering the services of the color guard to parades, grave dedications, and other |
---|
31 | 31 | | appropriate events; and participating in naturalization ceremonies for new citizens; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Tennessee Code Annotated, § 49-6-1001, requires daily recitation of the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States in each classroom in which the flag is |
---|
34 | 34 | | displayed and encourages patriotic organizations such as the Tennessee Society Sons of the |
---|
35 | 35 | | American Revolution to donate flags to schools to ensure the presence of the flag of the United |
---|
36 | 36 | | States of America in each classroom; and |
---|

41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, in furtherance of this goal, the Society has donated over 4,000 flags to |

42 | 42 | | classrooms across the State of Tennessee through its America 250 Flags for Freedom project; |

44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, over the past 135 years, the Society has counted among its Compatriots |
---|
45 | 45 | | numerous citizens who have achieved high positions of acclaim in their chosen fields of public |
---|
46 | 46 | | service and endeavor, including Education and Letters, Military and Law, and Politics; these |
---|
47 | 47 | | Compatriots include Lt. General Frank Maxwell Andrews, for whom Andrews Air Force Base is |
---|
48 | 48 | | named; General William Westmoreland; Lt. Colonel P.Z. Horton; U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver; |
---|
49 | 49 | | Governor Ned Ray McWherter; Tennessee Senate Majority Leader and United States District |
---|
50 | 50 | | Court Judge Mark Norris; State Senators Todd Gardenhire and Ed Jackson; and State Senate |
---|
51 | 51 | | Sergeants-at-Arms Ronnie Townes, Bruce Jackson, and Dan Lee, among others; and |
---|
52 | 52 | | WHEREAS, TNSSAR annually honors individuals for good citizenship as well as those |
---|
53 | 53 | | who have evinced outstanding bravery and self-sacrifice in the face of imminent danger; the |
---|
54 | 54 | | Society also recognizes select law enforcement officials who have demonstrated outstanding |
---|
55 | 55 | | service with the Law Enforcement Award; and |
---|
56 | 56 | | WHEREAS, moreover, the Society annually acknowledges outstanding high school |
---|
57 | 57 | | students with the Good Citizenship Award and recognizes exceptional JROTC cadets with the |
---|
58 | 58 | | ROTC Award; TNSSAR also conducts State scholarship competitions for Eagle Scouts and |
---|
59 | 59 | | hosts a statewide historical oration contest; and |
---|
60 | 60 | | WHEREAS, Tennessee Code Annotated, § 15-2-114, provides that "April 19 of each |
---|
61 | 61 | | year shall be observed as 'Patriots' Day,' to honor and recognize the opening events of the War |
---|
62 | 62 | | of the Revolution"; TNSSAR annually commemorates Patriots' Day by presenting the Colors in |
---|
63 | 63 | | the Tennessee Senate; and |
