55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to a study regarding uniform election dates.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. (a) The secretary of state shall conduct a study
1010 to evaluate the feasibility and advisability of eliminating by 2013
1111 the uniform election date in May.
1212 (b) In conducting the study, the secretary of state shall
1313 consider:
1414 (1) whether voting districts would need to be
1515 consolidated if the uniform election date in May were eliminated;
1616 (2) whether longer ballots would negatively affect
1717 voter behavior; and
1818 (3) any likely effects on local governments of
1919 eliminating the uniform election date in May.
2020 (c) The secretary of state shall develop recommendations on
2121 how to mitigate or avoid any negative effects that may result from
2222 eliminating the uniform election date in May.
2323 (d) Following the study, the secretary of state shall file a
2424 written report containing findings with the speaker of the house of
2525 representatives and the lieutenant governor not later than December
2626 1, 2010.
2727 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
