| 7 | 7 | | relating to curriculum requirements for the recommended and |

| 8 | 8 | | advanced public high school programs. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.025(b-1), Education Code, is amended |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (b-1) The State Board of Education by rule shall require |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | that: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (1) [except as provided by Subsection (b-2),] the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | curriculum requirements for the recommended and advanced high |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | school programs under Subsection (a) include a requirement that |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | students successfully complete: |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (A) a science and mathematics curriculum that |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | prescribes, among other requirements established by the board, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | successful completion of four courses in mathematics and four |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | courses in science, from among courses approved for each subject by |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the board [of the foundation curriculum under Section |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 28.002(a)(1)]; |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (B) a career and technology curriculum |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | that prescribes, among other requirements established by the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | board, successful completion of four career and technology courses, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | three courses in mathematics, and three courses in science, from |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | among courses approved for each subject by the board; or |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (C) a humanities curriculum that prescribes, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | among other requirements established by the board, successful |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | completion of: |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (i) courses in English language arts, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | social studies, languages other than English, and fine arts, from |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | among courses approved for each subject by the board; and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | (ii) three courses in mathematics and three |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | courses in science from among courses approved for each subject by |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | the board; and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | (2) one or more courses offered in the required |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | curriculum for the recommended and advanced high school programs |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | include a research writing component. |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | SECTION 2. Section 28.025(b-2), Education Code, is |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | repealed. |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | SECTION 3. Not later than January 1, 2010, the State Board |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | of Education shall adopt rules as required by Section 28.025(b-1), |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | Education Code, as amended by this Act. The rules shall provide |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | that the curriculum requirements for the recommended and advanced |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | high school programs adopted under that subsection apply to a |
|---|
| 48 | 48 | | student regardless of the school year in which the student entered |
|---|
| 49 | 49 | | the ninth grade. |
|---|
| 50 | 50 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 51 | 51 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 52 | 52 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 53 | 53 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 54 | 54 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
