55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to curriculum requirements for the recommended and
88 advanced public high school programs.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 28.025(b-1), Education Code, is amended
1111 to read as follows:
1212 (b-1) The State Board of Education by rule shall require
1313 that:
1414 (1) [except as provided by Subsection (b-2),] the
1515 curriculum requirements for the recommended and advanced high
1616 school programs under Subsection (a) include a requirement that
1717 students successfully complete:
1818 (A) a science and mathematics curriculum that
1919 prescribes, among other requirements established by the board,
2020 successful completion of four courses in mathematics and four
2121 courses in science, from among courses approved for each subject by
2222 the board [of the foundation curriculum under Section
2323 28.002(a)(1)];
2424 (B) a career and technology curriculum
2525 that prescribes, among other requirements established by the
2626 board, successful completion of four career and technology courses,
2727 three courses in mathematics, and three courses in science, from
2828 among courses approved for each subject by the board; or
2929 (C) a humanities curriculum that prescribes,
3030 among other requirements established by the board, successful
3131 completion of:
3232 (i) courses in English language arts,
3333 social studies, languages other than English, and fine arts, from
3434 among courses approved for each subject by the board; and
3535 (ii) three courses in mathematics and three
3636 courses in science from among courses approved for each subject by
3737 the board; and
3838 (2) one or more courses offered in the required
3939 curriculum for the recommended and advanced high school programs
4040 include a research writing component.
4141 SECTION 2. Section 28.025(b-2), Education Code, is
4242 repealed.
4343 SECTION 3. Not later than January 1, 2010, the State Board
4444 of Education shall adopt rules as required by Section 28.025(b-1),
4545 Education Code, as amended by this Act. The rules shall provide
4646 that the curriculum requirements for the recommended and advanced
4747 high school programs adopted under that subsection apply to a
4848 student regardless of the school year in which the student entered
4949 the ninth grade.
5050 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
5151 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
5252 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
5353 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
5454 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
