77 relating to a salary career ladder for correctional officers.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by
1010 adding Section 493.0072 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 493.0072. SALARY CAREER LADDER FOR CORRECTIONAL
1212 OFFICERS. (a) The executive director shall adopt a salary career
1313 ladder for correctional officers. The salary career ladder must
1414 base a correctional officer's salary on the officer's
1515 classification and years of service with the department.
1616 (b) For purposes of the salary schedule, the department
1717 shall classify all correctional officer positions as Correctional
1818 Officer I, Correctional Officer II, Correctional Officer III,
1919 Correctional Officer IV, Correctional Officer V, or Correctional
2020 Officer VI.
2121 SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date
2222 of this Act, but not later than the 30th day after that date, the
2323 executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice
2424 shall adopt a salary career ladder for correctional officers as
2525 required by Section 493.0072, Government Code, as added by this
2626 Act. Beginning the first day of the month following the date on
2727 which the executive director adopts the salary career ladder, each
2828 correctional officer to whom the schedule applies is entitled to a
2929 salary in an amount that meets or exceeds the amount specified in
3030 the schedule for the officer's classification and years of service
3131 with the department.
3232 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3333 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3434 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3535 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3636 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
