| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | adding Section 493.0072 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Sec. 493.0072. SALARY CAREER LADDER FOR CORRECTIONAL |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | OFFICERS. (a) The executive director shall adopt a salary career |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | ladder for correctional officers. The salary career ladder must |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | base a correctional officer's salary on the officer's |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | classification and years of service with the department. |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (b) For purposes of the salary schedule, the department |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | shall classify all correctional officer positions as Correctional |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Officer I, Correctional Officer II, Correctional Officer III, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Correctional Officer IV, Correctional Officer V, or Correctional |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Officer VI. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | of this Act, but not later than the 30th day after that date, the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | shall adopt a salary career ladder for correctional officers as |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | required by Section 493.0072, Government Code, as added by this |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Act. Beginning the first day of the month following the date on |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | which the executive director adopts the salary career ladder, each |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | correctional officer to whom the schedule applies is entitled to a |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | salary in an amount that meets or exceeds the amount specified in |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the schedule for the officer's classification and years of service |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | with the department. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
