66 AN ACT
77 relating to the identification information required of an applicant
88 for a driver's license.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 521.142, Transportation Code, is amended
1111 by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (a-1) to read as
1212 follows:
1313 (a) An application for an original license must state the
1414 applicant's full name and place and date of birth. This information
1515 must be verified by presentation of proof of identity satisfactory
1616 to the department. The department must accept the following
1717 documents as satisfactory proof of identity under this subsection:
1818 (1) an offender identification card or similar form of
1919 identification issued to an inmate by the Texas Department of
2020 Criminal Justice; or
2121 (2) an identity document that is issued by the
2222 government of another country, if that document bears the
2323 applicant's photograph, full name, and date of birth and the
2424 government of the other country has established reasonable
2525 mechanisms by which the department can verify the identity
2626 document.
2727 (a-1) For purposes of Subsection (a)(2), an identity
2828 document includes a passport, a consular identity document, and a
2929 national identity document that complies with federal law.
3030 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
