55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to approval by the State Board of Education of certain
88 public school courses for use in satisfying mathematics or science
99 course requirements under the recommended and advanced high school
1010 programs.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Section 28.025, Education Code, is amended by
1313 amending Subsection (b-1) and adding Subsection (b-3) to read as
1414 follows:
1515 (b-1) The State Board of Education by rule shall require
1616 that:
1717 (1) except as provided by Subsection (b-2) or (b-3),
1818 the curriculum requirements for the recommended and advanced high
1919 school programs under Subsection (a) include a requirement that
2020 students successfully complete four courses in each subject of the
2121 foundation curriculum under Section 28.002(a)(1); and
2222 (2) one or more courses offered in the required
2323 curriculum for the recommended and advanced high school programs
2424 include a research writing component.
2525 (b-3) On application from a school district, the State Board
2626 of Education may approve use of a course offered by the district in
2727 the enrichment curriculum under Section 28.002(a)(2) to satisfy
2828 curriculum requirements for a mathematics or science course under
2929 Subsection (b-1)(1) if the board determines that the course offered
3030 by the district in the enrichment curriculum contains academic
3131 content substantively similar to and as rigorous as a mathematics
3232 or science course in the foundation curriculum.
3333 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010
3434 school year.
3535 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3636 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3737 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3838 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3939 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
