9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 27, Government Code, is | |
11 | 11 | amended by adding Section 27.0055 to read as follows: | |
12 | 12 | Sec. 27.0055. QUALIFICATIONS OF JUSTICES OF CERTAIN | |
13 | 13 | COUNTIES. A justice of the peace in a county with a population of | |
14 | 14 | more than one million must be licensed to practice law in this | |
15 | 15 | state. | |
16 | 16 | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | |
17 | 17 | to a justice of the peace elected or appointed on or after the | |
18 | 18 | effective date of this Act. A justice of the peace elected or | |
19 | 19 | appointed before the effective date of this Act is governed by the | |
20 | 20 | law in effect immediately before the effective date of this Act | |
21 | 21 | until the term for which the justice of the peace was elected or | |
22 | 22 | appointed expires, and the former law is continued in effect for | |
23 | 23 | that purpose. | |
24 | 24 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | |
25 | 25 | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | |
26 | 26 | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | |
27 | 27 | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | |
28 | 28 | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
