9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Section 25.087(b), Education Code, is amended to | |
11 | 11 | read as follows: | |
12 | 12 | (b) A school district shall excuse a student from attending | |
13 | 13 | school for: | |
14 | 14 | (1) the following purposes, including travel for those | |
15 | 15 | purposes: | |
16 | 16 | (A) observing religious holy days; or | |
17 | 17 | (B) attending a required court appearance; or | |
18 | 18 | (2) a temporary absence for the following purposes, | |
19 | 19 | [resulting from health care professionals] if that student | |
20 | 20 | commences classes or returns to school on the same day as the | |
21 | 21 | temporary absence: | |
22 | 22 | (A) attending an appointment with a health care | |
23 | 23 | professional; or | |
24 | 24 | (B) voting in a national, state, or local | |
25 | 25 | election [of the appointment]. | |
26 | 26 | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010 | |
27 | 27 | school year. | |
28 | 28 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | |
29 | 29 | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | |
30 | 30 | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | |
31 | 31 | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | |
32 | 32 | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
