55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to availability of health coverage for certain employees
88 of institutions of higher education.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 1551.101, Insurance Code, is amended by
1111 adding Subsection (f) to read as follows:
1212 (f) An employee designated by an institution of higher
1313 education as an instructional employee working less than 40 and at
1414 least 20 hours a week is eligible to participate in the group
1515 benefits program as a full-time employee.
1616 SECTION 2. Section 1551.319(a), Insurance Code, is amended
1717 to read as follows:
1818 (a) A full-time employee and each instructional employee
1919 described by Section 1551.101(f) receives the benefits of a full
2020 state contribution for coverage under this chapter.
2121 SECTION 3. Section 1601.201, Insurance Code, is amended by
2222 amending Subsection (c) and adding Subsection (c-1) to read as
2323 follows:
2424 (c) Except as provided by Subsection (c-1), for [For] an
2525 employee designated by the system as working less than 40 hours a
2626 week, including an individual employed by the system in a position
2727 that as a condition of employment requires the individual to be
2828 enrolled as a student in the system in graduate-level courses, the
2929 system, from money appropriated from the general revenue fund, may
3030 contribute:
3131 (1) not more than 50 percent of the cost of basic
3232 coverage for the employee; and
3333 (2) not more than 25 percent of the cost of dependent
3434 coverage.
3535 (c-1) For a part-time instructional employee designated by
3636 a system as working less than 40 and at least 20 hours a week, the
3737 system may contribute:
3838 (1) the full cost of basic coverage for the employee;
3939 and
4040 (2) not more than 50 percent of the cost of dependent
4141 coverage.
4242 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
