66 AN ACT
77 relating to the number of license plates to be issued for and
88 displayed on a motor vehicle.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 502, Transportation Code,
1111 is amended by adding Section 502.010 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 502.010. ISSUANCE AND DISPLAY OF LICENSE PLATE. (a)
1313 Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, including
1414 Section 502.180, the department shall issue only one license plate
1515 for attachment at the rear of the vehicle for which the plate is
1616 issued.
1717 (b) Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary,
1818 including Section 502.404(a), a person is entitled to operate on a
1919 public highway a vehicle that displays only one license plate if the
2020 plate is attached at the rear of the vehicle. A person may operate
2121 on a public highway a vehicle that displays two license plates if
2222 both plates were assigned by the department for the registration
2323 period as a set of plates.
2424 (c) In any provision of this code that relates to the
2525 issuance or display of "license plates," "plates," or a "set of
2626 plates," the term means only one license plate.
2727 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act regarding the
2828 issuance of license plates by the Texas Department of
2929 Transportation applies only to the issuance of license plates by
3030 the department for a registration period beginning on or after the
3131 effective date of this Act. For a registration period that begins
3232 before the effective date of this Act, the department shall issue
3333 license plates as required by the law in effect immediately before
3434 the effective date of this Act, and the former law is continued in
3535 effect for that purpose.
3636 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
