55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to requiring training in geriatric medicine as a requisite
88 for certain medical degrees.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1111 amending by adding Section 51.311 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 51.311. GERIATRIC MEDICINE TRAINING REQUIRED. (a) In
1313 this section, "medical school" means:
1414 (1) a medical school as defined by Section 61.501; and
1515 (2) any other institution of higher education, as
1616 defined by Section 61.003, or school, department, or college of
1717 such an institution, that awards medical degrees.
1818 (b) Each medical school shall include training in geriatric
1919 medicine in the curriculum required for a medical degree that
2020 serves to qualify a person to engage in patient care.
2121 (c) The training under Subsection (b) must be provided
2222 through:
2323 (1) classroom instruction; and
2424 (2) clinical experience.
2525 (c-1) This section does not apply to the requirements for
2626 the degree program of a student who entered the degree program at a
2727 medical school before the 2010 fall semester. This subsection
2828 expires January 1, 2016.
2929 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3030 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3131 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3232 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3333 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
