| 7 | 7 | | relating to requiring training in geriatric medicine as a requisite |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amending by adding Section 51.311 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Sec. 51.311. GERIATRIC MEDICINE TRAINING REQUIRED. (a) In |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | this section, "medical school" means: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (1) a medical school as defined by Section 61.501; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (2) any other institution of higher education, as |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | defined by Section 61.003, or school, department, or college of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | such an institution, that awards medical degrees. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (b) Each medical school shall include training in geriatric |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | medicine in the curriculum required for a medical degree that |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | serves to qualify a person to engage in patient care. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (c) The training under Subsection (b) must be provided |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | through: |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | (1) classroom instruction; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (2) clinical experience. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (c-1) This section does not apply to the requirements for |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the degree program of a student who entered the degree program at a |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | medical school before the 2010 fall semester. This subsection |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | expires January 1, 2016. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
