66 AN ACT
77 relating to a legislative outreach program requiring members of the
88 State Board of Education to visit public schools.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 7, Education Code, is
1111 amended by adding Section 7.117 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 7.117. BACK-TO-SCHOOL PROGRAM. (a) The board shall
1313 establish a program under which members of the board visit public
1414 schools in their districts. The board shall provide board members
1515 with the resources necessary to enable each member to effectively
1616 participate in the program.
1717 (b) Under the program, each board member must visit at least
1818 three public schools in the member's district during each school
1919 year. To the extent practicable, during that period a board member
2020 shall visit at least one public school in each accreditation status
2121 recognized by the commissioner. Each visit must be planned in
2222 advance with the participating school and must include one or more
2323 opportunities for the board member to interact with students in
2424 discussions or activities.
2525 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2626 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2727 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2828 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2929 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
