9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 7, Education Code, is |
---|
11 | 11 | | amended by adding Section 7.117 to read as follows: |
---|
12 | 12 | | Sec. 7.117. BACK-TO-SCHOOL PROGRAM. (a) The board shall |
---|
13 | 13 | | establish a program under which members of the board visit public |
---|
14 | 14 | | schools in their districts. The board shall provide board members |
---|
15 | 15 | | with the resources necessary to enable each member to effectively |
---|
16 | 16 | | participate in the program. |
---|
17 | 17 | | (b) Under the program, each board member must visit at least |
---|
18 | 18 | | three public schools in the member's district during each school |
---|
19 | 19 | | year. To the extent practicable, during that period a board member |
---|
20 | 20 | | shall visit at least one public school in each accreditation status |
---|
21 | 21 | | recognized by the commissioner. Each visit must be planned in |
---|
22 | 22 | | advance with the participating school and must include one or more |
---|
23 | 23 | | opportunities for the board member to interact with students in |
---|
24 | 24 | | discussions or activities. |
---|
25 | 25 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
26 | 26 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
27 | 27 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
28 | 28 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
29 | 29 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
---|
