55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the provision of career and technology education as an
88 optional supplement to the general academic program provided by
99 public schools.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Section 28.002(n), Education Code, is amended to
1212 read as follows:
1313 (n) The State Board of Education shall [may] by rule
1414 develop and implement a plan designed to incorporate foundation
1515 curriculum requirements into the career and technology education
1616 curriculum under Subsection (a)(2)(F). In developing and
1717 implementing the plan, the board shall ensure that the career and
1818 technology education curriculum is provided as an optional
1919 supplement for students instead of as a substitute for foundation
2020 curriculum classes designed to prepare a student for postsecondary
2121 education.
2222 SECTION 2. Section 29.183, Education Code, is amended by
2323 adding Subsection (d) to read as follows:
2424 (d) Career and technology classes may not be offered as a
2525 substitute for academic classes designed to prepare a student for
2626 postsecondary education.
2727 SECTION 3. This Act applies beginning with the 2010-2011
2828 school year.
2929 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
