 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 AN ACT
 relating to assigning mentor teachers to new teachers in certain
 subject areas.
 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 SECTION 1. Section 21.458, Education Code, is amended by
 adding Subsections (a-1) and (e) to read as follows:
 (a-1)  Notwithstanding Subsection (a), each school district
 shall assign a mentor teacher to each classroom teacher who has less
 than one year of teaching experience and is teaching a mathematics
 or science course at a high school grade level. A teacher assigned
 as a mentor under this subsection must:
 (1) teach in the same school;
 (2) teach the same subject area; and
 (3)  meet the qualifications prescribed by
 commissioner rules adopted under Subsection (b).
 (e)  Information obtained by a mentor regarding a new teacher
 as a result of the mentoring relationship under this section is
 confidential, except that the mentor may share the information with
 school district personnel as otherwise required by state or federal
 law.
 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010
 school year.
 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
