88 relating to school bus emergency evacuation training.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 34.0021, Education Code, is amended by
1111 amending Subsections (a) and (b) and adding Subsection (c-1) to
1212 read as follows:
1313 (a) Pursuant to the safety standards established by the
1414 Department of Public Safety under Section 34.002, each school
1515 district may [shall] conduct a training session for students and
1616 teachers concerning procedures for evacuating a school bus during
1717 an emergency.
1818 (b) A school district that chooses to conduct a training
1919 session under Subsection (a) is encouraged to [shall] conduct the
2020 school bus emergency evacuation training session [at least twice
2121 each school year, with one training session occurring] in the fall
2222 of the school year [and one training session occurring in the
2323 spring]. The school district is also encouraged to structure the
2424 training session so that a [A] portion of the [training] session
2525 occurs [must occur] on a school bus and the [training] session lasts
2626 [must last] for at least one hour.
2727 (c-1) Immediately before each field trip involving
2828 transportation by school bus, a school district is encouraged to
2929 review school bus emergency evacuation procedures with the school
3030 bus passengers, including a demonstration of the school bus
3131 emergency exits and the safe manner to exit.
3232 SECTION 2. Sections 34.0021(d) and (e), Education Code, are
3333 repealed.
3434 SECTION 3. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010
3535 school year.
3636 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3737 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3838 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3939 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4040 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
