55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to authorization for school districts to provide mentors
88 for teachers assigned to a new subject or grade level.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 21.458(a), Education Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 (a) Each school district may assign a mentor teacher to each
1313 classroom teacher who has less than two years of teaching
1414 experience in the subject or grade level to which the teacher is
1515 assigned. A teacher assigned as a mentor must:
1616 (1) teach in the same school;
1717 (2) to the extent practicable, teach the same subject
1818 or grade level, as applicable; and
1919 (3) meet the qualifications prescribed by
2020 commissioner rules adopted under Subsection (b).
2121 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2222 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2323 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2424 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2525 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
