7 | 7 | | relating to an alcohol awareness component of the health curriculum |

8 | 8 | | used in public schools. |

9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
---|
11 | 11 | | adding Subsection (r) to read as follows: |

12 | 12 | | (r) The State Board of Education shall adopt essential |
---|
13 | 13 | | knowledge and skills that address the dangers, causes, |
---|
14 | 14 | | consequences, signs, symptoms, and treatment of binge drinking and |
---|
15 | 15 | | alcohol poisoning. The agency shall compile a list of alcohol |
---|
16 | 16 | | awareness evidence-based programs from which a school district |
---|
17 | 17 | | shall choose for use in the district's health curriculum. In this |
---|
18 | 18 | | subsection, "alcohol awareness evidence-based program" means a |
---|
19 | 19 | | program that, on the basis of evaluations that use valid and |
---|
20 | 20 | | reliable measures and that are published in peer-reviewed journals, |
---|
21 | 21 | | has been proven to effectively prevent or delay alcohol use among |
---|
22 | 22 | | students. |
---|
23 | 23 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010 |
---|
24 | 24 | | school year. |
---|
25 | 25 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
26 | 26 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
27 | 27 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
28 | 28 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
29 | 29 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
