44 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
55 AN ACT
66 relating to an exemption from the curriculum requirements for
77 automatic admission to public institutions of higher education for
88 certain students affected by a natural disaster.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 51.803(b), Education Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 (b) An applicant who does not satisfy the curriculum
1313 requirements prescribed by Subsection (a)(2)(A)(i) or (ii) is
1414 considered to have satisfied those requirements if the student
1515 completed the portion of the recommended or advanced curriculum or
1616 of the curriculum equivalent in content and rigor, as applicable,
1717 that was available to the student but was unable to complete the
1818 remainder of the curriculum solely because courses necessary to
1919 complete the remainder were unavailable to the student at the
2020 appropriate times in the student's high school career as a result of
2121 course scheduling, lack of enrollment capacity, a natural disaster,
2222 or another cause not within the student's control.
2323 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2424 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2525 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2626 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2727 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
