55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to participation by certain educational aides in a school
88 district's mentoring program.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 21.458, Education Code, is amended by
1111 adding Subsection (a-1) and amending Subsection (c) to read as
1212 follows:
1313 (a-1) Each school district may assign a mentor to each
1414 educational aide who has less than one year of classroom
1515 experience. A person assigned as a mentor under this subsection is
1616 not required to be a teacher and is not subject to the requirements
1717 prescribed by Subsections (a) and (b) that apply to a mentor teacher
1818 assigned to mentor a classroom teacher.
1919 (c) From the funds appropriated to the agency for purposes
2020 of this section, the commissioner shall adopt rules and provide
2121 funding to school districts that assign mentors [mentor teachers]
2222 under this section. Funding provided to districts under this
2323 section may be used only for providing:
2424 (1) mentor [teacher] stipends;
2525 (2) scheduled time for mentors [mentor teachers] to
2626 provide mentoring to assigned classroom teachers and educational
2727 aides; and
2828 (3) mentoring support through providers of mentor
2929 training.
3030 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2009-2010
3131 school year.
3232 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3333 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3434 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3535 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3636 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
