55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to an alternative graduation plan for students planning to
88 attend certain postsecondary educational institutions.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 28.025(b-1), Education Code, is amended
1111 to read as follows:
1212 (b-1) The State Board of Education by rule shall require
1313 that:
1414 (1) except as provided by Subsection (b-2), the
1515 curriculum requirements for the recommended and advanced high
1616 school programs under Subsection (a) include a requirement that
1717 students successfully complete:
1818 (A) four courses in each subject of the
1919 foundation curriculum under Section 28.002(a)(1); or
2020 (B) a career and technology curriculum that
2121 provides a program of rigorous, standards-based coursework
2222 designed to prepare students to attend a postsecondary educational
2323 institution that primarily offers associate's degrees or
2424 certificates or other credentials other than baccalaureate or
2525 advanced degrees; and
2626 (2) one or more courses offered in the required
2727 curriculum for the recommended and advanced high school programs
2828 include a research writing component.
2929 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with students who
3030 enter the ninth grade in the 2010-2011 school year.
3131 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3232 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3333 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3434 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3535 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
