| 7 | 7 | | relating to an alternative graduation plan for students planning to |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | attend certain postsecondary educational institutions. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.025(b-1), Education Code, is amended |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (b-1) The State Board of Education by rule shall require |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | that: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (1) except as provided by Subsection (b-2), the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | curriculum requirements for the recommended and advanced high |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | school programs under Subsection (a) include a requirement that |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | students successfully complete: |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (A) four courses in each subject of the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | foundation curriculum under Section 28.002(a)(1); or |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (B) a career and technology curriculum that |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | provides a program of rigorous, standards-based coursework |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | designed to prepare students to attend a postsecondary educational |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | institution that primarily offers associate's degrees or |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | certificates or other credentials other than baccalaureate or |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | advanced degrees; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (2) one or more courses offered in the required |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | curriculum for the recommended and advanced high school programs |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | include a research writing component. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with students who |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | enter the ninth grade in the 2010-2011 school year. |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
