55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the establishment of a school of law at The University
88 of Texas at Brownsville.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Chapter 78, Education Code, is amended by adding
1111 Section 78.11 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 78.11. SCHOOL OF LAW. (a) The board shall establish
1313 and maintain a school of law as a professional school of the
1414 university.
1515 (b) The board may prescribe courses leading to customary
1616 degrees offered at other leading American schools of law and may
1717 award those degrees.
1818 (c) The school of law shall be located in Cameron County.
1919 SECTION 2. Not later than December 1, 2009, the Texas
2020 Higher Education Coordinating Board shall prepare a feasibility
2121 study to assist the board of regents of The University of Texas
2222 System in establishing a law school as provided by this Act.
2323 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2424 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2525 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2626 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2727 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
