| 9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 662, Government Code, is | |
| 11 | 11 | amended by adding Section 662.055 to read as follows: | |
| 12 | 12 | Sec. 662.055. DR. HECTOR P. GARCIA DAY. (a) The third | |
| 13 | 13 | Wednesday of September is Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day in memory of his | |
| 14 | 14 | significant contributions to the Mexican American civil rights | |
| 15 | 15 | movement. Dr. Garcia was a distinguished physician, a recipient of | |
| 16 | 16 | the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a World War II hero who was | |
| 17 | 17 | awarded a Bronze Star medal with six battle stars, and the founder | |
| 18 | 18 | of the American GI Forum, which promotes civil rights protection of | |
| 19 | 19 | Hispanic veterans and all Americans. | |
| 20 | 20 | (b) Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day shall be regularly observed by | |
| 21 | 21 | appropriate ceremonies and activities in public schools, | |
| 22 | 22 | communities, and other places to properly commemorate the | |
| 23 | 23 | importance of the contributions made by Dr. Garcia. | |
| 24 | 24 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
