55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the use of public funds to print certain public
88 documents in a language other than English and other bilingual
99 requirements.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Chapter 2051, Government Code, is amended by
1212 adding Subchapter D to read as follows:
1313 SUBCHAPTER D. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE DOCUMENTS
1414 Sec. 2051.076. USE OF PUBLIC MONEY TO PRINT PUBLIC
1515 DOCUMENTS IN LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH. (a) In this section,
1616 "state agency" means a board, commission, department, office,
1717 institution, including an institution of higher education as
1818 defined by Section 61.003, Education Code, or other agency in the
1919 executive branch of the state government.
2020 (b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), a state agency may
2121 not use public money to print a public document in a language other
2222 than English.
2323 (c) This section does not apply to:
2424 (1) a historical document originally printed in a
2525 language other than English; or
2626 (2) a document required under federal law or by the
2727 federal government to be printed in a language other than English.
2828 SECTION 2. Chapter 272, Election Code, is repealed.
2929 SECTION 3. The change in law made by this Act applies only
3030 to a document printed by a state agency on or after the effective
3131 date of this Act.
3232 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
