55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to school bus emergency evacuation training.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Sections 34.0021(a) and (b), Education Code, are
1010 amended to read as follows:
1111 (a) A [Pursuant to the safety standards established by the
1212 Department of Public Safety under Section 34.002, each] school
1313 district may elect to [shall] conduct [a] training [session] for
1414 students and teachers concerning procedures for evacuating a school
1515 bus during an emergency.
1616 (b) A school district that elects to conduct the school bus
1717 emergency evacuation training shall conduct the [school bus
1818 emergency evacuation] training in compliance with the safety
1919 standards established by the Department of Public Safety under
2020 Section 34.002 [at least twice each school year, with one training
2121 session occurring in the fall and one training session occurring in
2222 the spring. A portion of the training session must occur on a
2323 school bus and the training session must last for at least one
2424 hour].
2525 SECTION 2. Sections 34.0021(d) and (e), Education Code, are
2626 repealed.
2727 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2828 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2929 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3030 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3131 Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
