4	4	HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
5	5	WHEREAS, Professional social workers assist individuals,
6	6	groups, and communities to restore or enhance their capacity for
7	7	social functioning, while creating societal conditions favorable
8	8	to their goals; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Only those highly trained and experienced
10	10	individuals who have earned social work degrees at the bachelor's,
11	11	master's, or doctoral level, completed a required number of
12	12	supervised hours in their particular field, and are licensed
13	13	through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners may be
14	14	considered professional social workers; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Social workers help people overcome some of life's
16	16	most difficult challenges, including poverty, discrimination,
17	17	abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment,
18	18	educational problems, disability, and mental illness to become
19	19	independent and productive citizens; they help prevent crises and
20	20	counsel individuals, families, and communities to cope more
21	21	effectively with the stresses inherent in everyday life; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Professional social workers may be found in every
23	23	facet of community life--in schools, hospitals, mental health
24	24	clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practice,
25	25	prisons, and military and corporate environments, and in numerous
26	26	public and private agencies that serve individuals and families in
27	27	need; now, therefore, be it
28	28	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
29	29	hereby designate April 27, 2009, as Social Work Day at the State
30	30	Capitol and extend a warm welcome and sincere best wishes to the
31	31	professional social workers and social work students present on
32	32	this day for an enjoyable and memorable visit to Austin; and, be it
33	33	further
34	34	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
35	35	prepared for the Texas Chapter of the National Association of
36	36	Social Workers as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
37	37	Representatives and Senate.
