5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Mitzi Jo Hopper Ziegner has been honored by the YWCA |

6 | 6 | | of Lubbock with a Women of Excellence Award for her remarkable |
---|
7 | 7 | | achievements in the fields of education and religion, and her |
---|
8 | 8 | | selection for this tribute is most fitting; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Women of Excellence Award was created in 1989 to |
---|
10 | 10 | | emphasize the vital roles that women play in both the civic and |
---|
11 | 11 | | professional worlds, honoring women for their achievements and for |
---|
12 | 12 | | their contributions to the community as leaders and volunteers; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Ziegner has dedicated her professional life to |
---|
14 | 14 | | improving the quality of education for elementary students; a 1995 |
---|
15 | 15 | | cum laude graduate of Texas Tech University, she earned a |
---|
16 | 16 | | bachelor's degree in human development and family studies and went |
---|
17 | 17 | | on to earn a master's degree in curriculum and instruction with a |
---|
18 | 18 | | reading and early childhood specialization from Wayland Baptist |
---|
19 | 19 | | University; she also completed extensive postgraduate professional |
---|
20 | 20 | | development courses and training in areas that include effectively |
---|
21 | 21 | | teaching children in poverty, positive classroom instruction and |
---|
22 | 22 | | discipline, gifted and talented education, and dyslexia |
---|
23 | 23 | | intervention; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Beginning her career in 1998 as a Head Start teacher |
---|
25 | 25 | | at Ballenger Early Childhood Center, Ms. Ziegner later worked as a |
---|
26 | 26 | | second-grade teacher at Nat Williams Elementary; while holding a |
---|
27 | 27 | | teaching position, she served as a part-time early childhood |
---|
28 | 28 | | education instructor at Texas Tech University and a cooperating |
---|
29 | 29 | | teacher and mentor for student teachers and lab and practicum |
---|
30 | 30 | | students; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, A woman of extraordinary talent and energy, Ms. |
---|
32 | 32 | | Ziegner currently holds three positions at Texas Tech University: |
---|
33 | 33 | | she is a full-time early childhood and elementary education |
---|
34 | 34 | | instructor and university supervisor in the Colleges of Education |
---|
35 | 35 | | and Human Sciences; she serves as an adjunct instructor in the |
---|
36 | 36 | | distance-learning program; and she is an independent educational |
---|
37 | 37 | | trainer, guest lecturer, and consultant for Texas Tech's Early Head |
---|
38 | 38 | | Start Program, the Christine DeVitt and Helen DeVitt Jones Child |
---|
39 | 39 | | Development Research Center, and the Lubbock, Lubbock-Cooper, and |
---|
40 | 40 | | Frenship Independent School Districts; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Outside of the classroom, Ms. Ziegner has made |
---|
42 | 42 | | valuable leadership contributions to education; an active |
---|
43 | 43 | | supporter of the Lubbock Independent School District, she has |
---|
44 | 44 | | worked on numerous committees and councils; after earning an |
---|
45 | 45 | | honorary membership in Phi Upsilon Omicron, the College of Human |
---|
46 | 46 | | Sciences honor society, she was named that organization's faculty |
---|
47 | 47 | | advisor, and she has generously assisted the College of Human |
---|
48 | 48 | | Sciences and its alumni association; and |
---|
49 | 49 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of her influence and actions to |
---|
50 | 50 | | improve the quality of elementary education, she was honored as the |
---|
51 | 51 | | 2004 Texas Tech University College of Human Sciences Distinguished |
---|
52 | 52 | | Alumni New Achiever; and |
---|
53 | 53 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Ziegner also shares her time with the Junior |
---|
54 | 54 | | League of Lubbock; an executive board member, she has served the |
---|
55 | 55 | | group as public relations chair, publicity chair, and member of the |
---|
56 | 56 | | 2008-2009 Nominating Committee; and |
---|
57 | 57 | | WHEREAS, With her receipt of a Women of Excellence Award, |
---|
58 | 58 | | Mitzi Ziegner joins an elite group of women who have been honored by |
---|
59 | 59 | | the YWCA of Lubbock; distinguished by her intelligence, |
---|
60 | 60 | | determination, and talent, she is indeed a worthy role model for |
---|
61 | 61 | | this and future generations; now, therefore, be it |
---|
62 | 62 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
63 | 63 | | hereby congratulate Mitzi Jo Hopper Ziegner on receiving a 2009 |

64 | 64 | | Women of Excellence Award from the YWCA of Lubbock and extend to her |
