44 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
55 WHEREAS, Mitzi Jo Hopper Ziegner has been honored by the YWCA
66 of Lubbock with a Women of Excellence Award for her remarkable
77 achievements in the fields of education and religion, and her
88 selection for this tribute is most fitting; and
99 WHEREAS, The Women of Excellence Award was created in 1989 to
1010 emphasize the vital roles that women play in both the civic and
1111 professional worlds, honoring women for their achievements and for
1212 their contributions to the community as leaders and volunteers; and
1313 WHEREAS, Ms. Ziegner has dedicated her professional life to
1414 improving the quality of education for elementary students; a 1995
1515 cum laude graduate of Texas Tech University, she earned a
1616 bachelor's degree in human development and family studies and went
1717 on to earn a master's degree in curriculum and instruction with a
1818 reading and early childhood specialization from Wayland Baptist
1919 University; she also completed extensive postgraduate professional
2020 development courses and training in areas that include effectively
2121 teaching children in poverty, positive classroom instruction and
2222 discipline, gifted and talented education, and dyslexia
2323 intervention; and
2424 WHEREAS, Beginning her career in 1998 as a Head Start teacher
2525 at Ballenger Early Childhood Center, Ms. Ziegner later worked as a
2626 second-grade teacher at Nat Williams Elementary; while holding a
2727 teaching position, she served as a part-time early childhood
2828 education instructor at Texas Tech University and a cooperating
2929 teacher and mentor for student teachers and lab and practicum
3030 students; and
3131 WHEREAS, A woman of extraordinary talent and energy, Ms.
3232 Ziegner currently holds three positions at Texas Tech University:
3333 she is a full-time early childhood and elementary education
3434 instructor and university supervisor in the Colleges of Education
3535 and Human Sciences; she serves as an adjunct instructor in the
3636 distance-learning program; and she is an independent educational
3737 trainer, guest lecturer, and consultant for Texas Tech's Early Head
3838 Start Program, the Christine DeVitt and Helen DeVitt Jones Child
3939 Development Research Center, and the Lubbock, Lubbock-Cooper, and
4040 Frenship Independent School Districts; and
4141 WHEREAS, Outside of the classroom, Ms. Ziegner has made
4242 valuable leadership contributions to education; an active
4343 supporter of the Lubbock Independent School District, she has
4444 worked on numerous committees and councils; after earning an
4545 honorary membership in Phi Upsilon Omicron, the College of Human
4646 Sciences honor society, she was named that organization's faculty
4747 advisor, and she has generously assisted the College of Human
4848 Sciences and its alumni association; and
4949 WHEREAS, In recognition of her influence and actions to
5050 improve the quality of elementary education, she was honored as the
5151 2004 Texas Tech University College of Human Sciences Distinguished
5252 Alumni New Achiever; and
5353 WHEREAS, Ms. Ziegner also shares her time with the Junior
5454 League of Lubbock; an executive board member, she has served the
5555 group as public relations chair, publicity chair, and member of the
5656 2008-2009 Nominating Committee; and
5757 WHEREAS, With her receipt of a Women of Excellence Award,
5858 Mitzi Ziegner joins an elite group of women who have been honored by
5959 the YWCA of Lubbock; distinguished by her intelligence,
6060 determination, and talent, she is indeed a worthy role model for
6161 this and future generations; now, therefore, be it
6262 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
6363 hereby congratulate Mitzi Jo Hopper Ziegner on receiving a 2009
6464 Women of Excellence Award from the YWCA of Lubbock and extend to her
6565 sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
6666 further
6767 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6868 prepared for Ms. Ziegner as an expression of high regard by the
6969 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
