5	5	WHEREAS, Sally Kipyego has been honored by the YWCA of
6	6	Lubbock with a Women of Excellence Special Award for her remarkable
7	7	athletic achievements, and her selection for this tribute is most
8	8	fitting; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The Women of Excellence Award was created in 1989 to
10	10	emphasize the vital roles that women play in both the civic and
11	11	professional worlds, honoring women for their achievements and for
12	12	their contributions to the community as leaders and volunteers; and
13	13	WHEREAS, One of the most accomplished women's cross-country
14	14	runners in NCAA Division I history, Ms. Kipyego has never lost a
15	15	race in three seasons at Texas Tech University; with three
16	16	consecutive national championships, she garnered as many
17	17	prestigious Honda Collegiate Women Sports Awards, becoming only the
18	18	eighth person to win three straight in any sport in the award's
19	19	33-year history; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Ms. Kipyego led her team to a program-best sixth
21	21	place at the 2006 national meet and seventh in 2008, and she was
22	22	named regional and national Female Cross Country Athlete of the
23	23	Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches
24	24	Association each season she competed; she also was the Big 12
25	25	Newcomer of the Year in 2006 and an Academic All-Big 12 second team
26	26	honoree in 2007, and she has won a total of eight national titles to
27	27	date; and
28	28	WHEREAS, In addition to setting the NCAA cross-country
29	29	championship meet and course record in 2008, Ms. Kipyego holds NCAA
30	30	records in the indoor 3,000 meters and the outdoor 10,000 meters;
31	31	indoors, she won national titles for 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters
32	32	in 2007 and 5,000 meters in 2008, earning national Athlete of the
33	33	Year honors; she was also Big 12 champion in the distance medley
34	34	relay, mile, and 3,000 meters in 2007 and in the mile and 3,000
35	35	meters in 2008, earning Big 12 Indoor Track Female Athlete of the
36	36	Year both seasons; and
37	37	WHEREAS, In outdoor competition, Ms. Kipyego has national
38	38	titles in the 10,000 meters and 5,000 meters, adding All America
39	39	status in the 5,000 meters in 2007 and l,500 meters in 2008; she was
40	40	honored as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches
41	41	Association Female Track Athlete of the Year in 2008 and swept the
42	42	5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the Big 12 Championships; and
43	43	WHEREAS, Ms. Kipyego began her college career at South Plains
44	44	College, where she won national titles in cross-country and the
45	45	1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, and 10,000 meters outdoors, earned
46	46	Female Athlete of the Year honors, and was named a Lady Texan
47	47	Academic Athlete; she is currently on schedule to earn her
48	48	bachelor's degree in nursing in May; and
49	49	WHEREAS, With her receipt of a Women of Excellence Award,
50	50	Sally Kipyego joins an elite group of women who have been honored by
51	51	the YWCA of Lubbock; distinguished by her intelligence,
52	52	determination, and talent, she is indeed a worthy role model for
53	53	this and future generations; now, therefore, be it
54	54	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
55	55	hereby congratulate Sally Kipyego on receiving the YWCA of
56	56	Lubbock's Women of Excellence 2009 Special Award for athletic
57	57	achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
58	58	success and happiness; and, be it further
59	59	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
60	60	prepared for Ms. Kipyego as an expression of high regard by the
61	61	Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
