5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Melinda Corwin has been honored by the YWCA of |

6 | 6 | | Lubbock with a Women of Excellence Award for her remarkable |

7 | 7 | | achievements in the field of science, and her selection for this |
---|
8 | 8 | | tribute is most fitting; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Women of Excellence Award was created in 1989 to |
---|
10 | 10 | | emphasize the vital roles that women play in both the civic and |
---|
11 | 11 | | professional worlds, honoring women for their achievements and for |
---|
12 | 12 | | their contributions to the community as leaders and volunteers; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, A clinician, educator, and assistant professor in |
---|
14 | 14 | | the Texas Tech University Department of Speech, Language, and |
---|
15 | 15 | | Hearing Sciences, Dr. Corwin has based her career on two core |
---|
16 | 16 | | tenets: the value of community and the human need to communicate; |
---|
17 | 17 | | and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Earning bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas |
---|
19 | 19 | | Tech in speech and hearing sciences, Dr. Corwin worked at Methodist |
---|
20 | 20 | | Hospital in Lubbock as a speech-language pathologist for five years |
---|
21 | 21 | | before joining the university faculty; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 1998, she established the Stroke |
---|
23 | 23 | | Recovery/Aphasia Group Therapy Program in an effort to improve the |
---|
24 | 24 | | communicative abilities of aphasia and dementia patients; recently |
---|
25 | 25 | | featured as an Aphasia Group of the Month in the National Aphasia |
---|
26 | 26 | | Association's December 2008 newsletter, this important program |
---|
27 | 27 | | provides speech-language therapy in a small-group setting to help |
---|
28 | 28 | | members regain communication skills and reenter their communities |
---|
29 | 29 | | and is often the sole source of socialization for its members; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Voted Outstanding Clinical Supervisor on three |
---|
31 | 31 | | occasions by her students, Dr. Corwin has earned either Teacher of |
---|
32 | 32 | | the Year or the Excellence in Teaching award 10 times; she serves as |
---|
33 | 33 | | the faculty sponsor for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences |
---|
34 | 34 | | Center chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing |
---|
35 | 35 | | Association and is a frequent appointee to committees within her |
---|
36 | 36 | | department and for the School of Allied Health Sciences; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Corwin has shared her knowledge statewide, |
---|
38 | 38 | | nationally, and internationally on such topics as communication, |
---|
39 | 39 | | adult neurogenic and swallowing disorders, enhancing communication |
---|
40 | 40 | | with dementia and aphasia patients, the impact of attention deficit |
---|
41 | 41 | | hyperactivity disorder on individuals and families, and the |
---|
42 | 42 | | benefits of service learning projects; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Extending her reach to broader audiences, Dr. Corwin |
---|
44 | 44 | | has written numerous articles that have been published in books and |
---|
45 | 45 | | peer-reviewed journals; she has also chaired the Publications Board |
---|
46 | 46 | | of the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, served as a |
---|
47 | 47 | | member of the Legislative Network and task forces, and twice sat on |
---|
48 | 48 | | the Convention Program Committee for the American |
---|
49 | 49 | | Speech-Language-Hearing Association; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, With her receipt of a Women of Excellence Award, |
---|
51 | 51 | | Melinda Corwin joins an elite group of women who have been honored |
---|
52 | 52 | | by the YWCA of Lubbock; distinguished by her intelligence, |
---|
53 | 53 | | determination, and talent, she is indeed a worthy role model for |
---|
54 | 54 | | this and future generations; now, therefore, be it |
---|
55 | 55 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

56 | 56 | | hereby congratulate Melinda Corwin on receiving a 2009 Women of |
---|
57 | 57 | | Excellence Award from the YWCA of Lubbock and extend to her sincere |

58 | 58 | | best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
