5	5	WHEREAS, His Eminence, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop
6	6	of Galveston-Houston, is delivering the invocation to the 81st
7	7	Texas Legislature on January 13, 2009, and this occasion presents a
8	8	fitting opportunity to congratulate him on his appointment as the
9	9	first Roman Catholic Cardinal in the American South; and
10	10	WHEREAS, The son of Nicholas and Jane DiNardo, Cardinal
11	11	DiNardo was born on May 23, 1949, in Steubenville, Ohio, and grew up
12	12	in neighboring Pittsburgh; after earning his bachelor's and
13	13	master's degrees in philosophy from The Catholic University of
14	14	America, this gifted scholar went on to study theology in Rome at
15	15	the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Augustinianum; he was
16	16	ordained in 1977 and served in the Diocese of Pittsburgh as a
17	17	parochial vicar, an assistant chancellor, and a professor at St.
18	18	Paul Seminary; and
19	19	WHEREAS, An appointment to the Vatican Congregation for
20	20	Bishops took Cardinal DiNardo back to Rome in 1984; six years later,
21	21	he requested to return to pastoral duties in the United States, and
22	22	the bishop of Pittsburgh eventually selected him to found the new
23	23	parish of Saints John and Paul; in addition, he served as an
24	24	assistant spiritual director at St. Paul Seminary and taught in the
25	25	formation program for priests; and
26	26	WHEREAS, In 1997, Cardinal DiNardo was ordained bishop of the
27	27	Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa; his achievements as a theologian,
28	28	pastor, educator, and administrator led to his appointment in 2004
29	29	as coadjutor bishop of Galveston-Houston; the diocese gained the
30	30	status of a metropolitan archdiocese later that year, and Cardinal
31	31	DiNardo succeeded Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza on the Archbishop's
32	32	retirement; on November 24, 2007, he was elevated to the College of
33	33	Cardinals, a historic milestone for the archdiocese, which
34	34	encompasses 10 counties and 1.5 million Catholics within its
35	35	boundaries; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Cardinal DiNardo has won wide admiration throughout
37	37	his career for his insightful sermons, deep compassion, and humble,
38	38	engaging manner; in guiding the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese, he
39	39	has made administrative appointments that reflect the area's
40	40	diversity and has fostered a unity of faith among people of varied
41	41	ethnic backgrounds; while shepherding a growing flock in South
42	42	Texas, he also shares his expertise through the United States
43	43	Conference of Catholic Bishops as an advisor to the National
44	44	Association of Pastoral Musicians and as a member of the Ad Hoc
45	45	Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism, and serves on the
46	46	board of The Catholic University of America and with the National
47	47	Catholic Partnership on Disability; and
48	48	WHEREAS, The inspiring spiritual leadership of Cardinal
49	49	DiNardo has ushered in an exciting era for the Galveston-Houston
50	50	Archdiocese, and his appointment as the first Roman Catholic
51	51	Cardinal in the southern United States has gladdened the hearts of
52	52	many people of faith; now, therefore, be it
53	53	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
54	54	hereby congratulate His Eminence, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo,
55	55	Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, on his elevation to the College of
56	56	Cardinals and welcome him to the State Capitol.
