| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Titus County visited Austin on |

| 7 | 7 | | March 25, 2009, to celebrate Mount Pleasant Day at the State |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Caddo Indians were the earliest inhabitants of this |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | scenic, rolling section of East Texas in historic times; drawn by |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | red mineral springs, they named a nearby hill "Pleasant Mound"; |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | later, Creek, Choctaw, and Cherokee lived in the area; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Settlers of European descent increasingly occupied |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the region in the 1840s, and the 1st Texas Legislature established |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Titus County in 1846; it was named for pioneer Andrew Jackson Titus, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | who opened the first road to the Red River port of Jefferson; Mount |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Pleasant was named as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Cotton and corn served as the foundation of the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | county's economy until the 1950s; oil was discovered in the Talco |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | oilfield in 1936, and today the harvesting of timber and the raising |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | of beef cattle also contribute to the region's prosperity; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mount Pleasant has been named as a Texas Main Street |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | City and one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America; this dynamic |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | community is home to Northeast Texas Community College and is a |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | center for poultry processing, health services, coal mining, and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the manufacture of trailers and ranch equipment; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy the county's fine |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | opportunities for recreation and cultural enrichment; Lakes Bob |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Sandlin, Monticello, and Welsh are favored destinations for |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | boating, camping, and waterskiing and are famed for record catches |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | of largemouth bass; the Whatley Center on the NTCC campus is home to |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | many excellent concerts and theatrical productions; and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, The natural beauty and rich heritage of Mount |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Pleasant contribute greatly to the attractiveness of the Lone Star |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | State, and the town's hardworking citizens may take great pride in |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | their history and the bright promise of their future; now, |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | therefore, be it |

| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | hereby recognize March 25, 2009, as Mount Pleasant Day at the State |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Capitol and extend to the citizens of this outstanding community |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | sincere best wishes for good fortune in all their endeavors. |
