55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Titus County visited Austin on
77 March 25, 2009, to celebrate Mount Pleasant Day at the State
88 Capitol; and
99 WHEREAS, Caddo Indians were the earliest inhabitants of this
1010 scenic, rolling section of East Texas in historic times; drawn by
1111 red mineral springs, they named a nearby hill "Pleasant Mound";
1212 later, Creek, Choctaw, and Cherokee lived in the area; and
1313 WHEREAS, Settlers of European descent increasingly occupied
1414 the region in the 1840s, and the 1st Texas Legislature established
1515 Titus County in 1846; it was named for pioneer Andrew Jackson Titus,
1616 who opened the first road to the Red River port of Jefferson; Mount
1717 Pleasant was named as the county seat; and
1818 WHEREAS, Cotton and corn served as the foundation of the
1919 county's economy until the 1950s; oil was discovered in the Talco
2020 oilfield in 1936, and today the harvesting of timber and the raising
2121 of beef cattle also contribute to the region's prosperity; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mount Pleasant has been named as a Texas Main Street
2323 City and one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America; this dynamic
2424 community is home to Northeast Texas Community College and is a
2525 center for poultry processing, health services, coal mining, and
2626 the manufacture of trailers and ranch equipment; and
2727 WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy the county's fine
2828 opportunities for recreation and cultural enrichment; Lakes Bob
2929 Sandlin, Monticello, and Welsh are favored destinations for
3030 boating, camping, and waterskiing and are famed for record catches
3131 of largemouth bass; the Whatley Center on the NTCC campus is home to
3232 many excellent concerts and theatrical productions; and
3333 WHEREAS, The natural beauty and rich heritage of Mount
3434 Pleasant contribute greatly to the attractiveness of the Lone Star
3535 State, and the town's hardworking citizens may take great pride in
3636 their history and the bright promise of their future; now,
3737 therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
3939 hereby recognize March 25, 2009, as Mount Pleasant Day at the State
4040 Capitol and extend to the citizens of this outstanding community
4141 sincere best wishes for good fortune in all their endeavors.
