5	5	WHEREAS, Margarita Olivarez has been honored by the YWCA of
6	6	Lubbock with a Women of Excellence Award for her remarkable
7	7	achievements in the field of business, and her selection for this
8	8	tribute is most fitting; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The Women of Excellence Award was created in 1989 to
10	10	emphasize the vital roles that women play in both the civic and
11	11	professional worlds, honoring women for their achievements and for
12	12	their contributions to the community as leaders and volunteers; and
13	13	WHEREAS, An executive in the communications industry,
14	14	Margarita Olivarez has achieved notable business success as the
15	15	national forecast leader at AT&T Wireless; she served as president
16	16	of the Community of Hispanic/Latino American Professionals board of
17	17	directors at Cingular before it was acquired by AT&T, and her
18	18	efforts to form that body earned her the President's Award; her
19	19	outstanding work was also recognized with Cingular's Circle of
20	20	Distinction for excellence in management; and
21	21	WHEREAS, In addition to her AT&T responsibilities, Mrs.
22	22	Olivarez serves as the public relations coordinator for KXTQ Magic
23	23	93.7 FM, where she previously served as a morning cohost; and
24	24	WHEREAS, This dedicated community leader has shared her time
25	25	and energy with Girl Scout Troop No. 73, founding the group in 1997
26	26	in an underserved area of Lubbock; named a Girl Scouts Woman of
27	27	Distinction in 2005, she has planned activities for the troop,
28	28	prepared and administered grants, and helped its members travel to
29	29	New York, Washington, D.C., and Europe; and
30	30	WHEREAS, Demonstrating her substantial leadership skills,
31	31	she has served as a board member, president, and vice president of
32	32	the Hispanic Association of Women, and her work in fund-raising,
33	33	education, and public relations earned her the group's Hispana of
34	34	the Year award in 1999; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Mrs. Olivarez also supports the work of the Lubbock
36	36	Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and she has been a valued member of
37	37	the boards of the United Way, Fiestas del Llano, HACEMOS, Keep
38	38	Lubbock Beautiful, and the National Hispanic Institute; in 2005,
39	39	she was recognized with a Jefferson Award for her outstanding
40	40	contributions to her community; and
41	41	WHEREAS, With her receipt of a Women of Excellence Award,
42	42	Margarita Olivarez joins an elite group of women who have been
43	43	honored by the YWCA of Lubbock; distinguished by her intelligence,
44	44	determination, and talent, she is indeed a worthy role model for
45	45	this and future generations; now, therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
47	47	hereby congratulate Margarita Olivarez on receiving a 2009 Women of
48	48	Excellence Award from the YWCA of Lubbock and extend to her sincere
49	49	best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
50	50	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
51	51	prepared for Mrs. Olivarez as an expression of high regard by the
52	52	Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
