| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Many Americans served courageously in the Vietnam |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | War, the longest conflict in which the United States has ever been |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | engaged; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Members of the U.S. armed forces were initially sent |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | to South Vietnam in an advisory capacity in 1961; the first American |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | ground combat units arrived there in 1965, and by 1969 |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | approximately 543,000 U.S. troops were serving in that country; by |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the time the war ended in April 1975, more than three million |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Americans had seen duty in Southeast Asia; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The Vietnam War claimed the lives of more than |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | 58,000 members of the U.S. armed forces, including over 3,400 |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Texans; more than 2,500 American servicemen were taken prisoner, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and an estimated 3,000 to 6,000 were counted as missing in action; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a lasting debt of gratitude and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | remembrance to the men and women who served this country in Vietnam, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and it is indeed fitting that a special day be set aside to honor |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | those military personnel for their brave and steadfast efforts and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | immeasurable sacrifice in one of the most difficult wars in this |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | nation's history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | hereby designate March 29, 2010, as Vietnam Veterans Day in the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | State of Texas and encourage all citizens of the Lone Star State to |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | join in observing this solemn day of tribute and commemoration. |
