5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and |

6 | 6 | | meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the family and friends |
---|
7 | 7 | | of Herbert Hugh Campbell of Paris, who passed away on April 14, |
---|
8 | 8 | | 2009, at the age of 69; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Campbell was a Paris native, born to Cora |
---|
10 | 10 | | Virginia and Louis Campbell on April 26, 1939; he was a member of |
---|
11 | 11 | | the 1951 state champion Little League baseball team and the 1955 |
---|
12 | 12 | | District 9AA varsity state championship baseball team; he lettered |
---|
13 | 13 | | in football, basketball, and baseball at Paris High School and was a |
---|
14 | 14 | | member of the National Honor Society and the 1957 |
---|
15 | 15 | | all-district/all-state football team; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1957, Mr. Campbell enrolled at Texas A&M |
---|
17 | 17 | | University, where he was active in the Corps of Cadets, earning the |
---|
18 | 18 | | rank of company commander his senior year; he also joined the Ross |
---|
19 | 19 | | Volunteers, the honor guard for the governor of the State of Texas, |
---|
20 | 20 | | and was a student trainer for both the Aggie basketball and football |
---|
21 | 21 | | teams, including a year as trainer for Coach Bear Bryant; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, After graduating with a bachelor's degree in |
---|
23 | 23 | | petroleum engineering in 1961, Mr. Campbell was commissioned as a |
---|
24 | 24 | | second lieutenant in the United States Army, participating in the |
---|
25 | 25 | | rebuilding of Korea after the war; following his service, he worked |
---|
26 | 26 | | for Gulf Oil Company as a petroleum engineer and then as an |
---|
27 | 27 | | executive of Reserve Equipment Service Corporation; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Campbell returned to Paris in 1986 as the |
---|
29 | 29 | | director of city utilities; in addition to overseeing the expansion |
---|
30 | 30 | | of both the water and sewer treatment plants for the community, he |
---|
31 | 31 | | taught water utility calculation classes throughout the state for |
---|
32 | 32 | | others in the water industry, and he created magic shows for |
---|
33 | 33 | | teaching schoolchildren about water conservation; his public |
---|
34 | 34 | | career ended with his retirement in 2004, but he continued to |
---|
35 | 35 | | contribute as a member of the Paris Water Committee; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, An active volunteer and supporter of youth and adult |
---|
37 | 37 | | sports, Mr. Campbell was president of the board of the Boys Club of |
---|
38 | 38 | | Paris, receiving the group's Wall of Honor Award in 2001; he became |
---|
39 | 39 | | involved with the Adult Special Olympics in 2005 and found great joy |
---|
40 | 40 | | working with each athlete; he also served as the head of delegation |
---|
41 | 41 | | for the Lamar County Contenders; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Campbell maintained a lifelong interest in |
---|
43 | 43 | | education, local affairs, and his alma mater; he was president of |
---|
44 | 44 | | the East Texas Regional School of Tyler and a Rotarian, and he |
---|
45 | 45 | | belonged to the Paris Noon Optimist Club, where he was co-chair of |
---|
46 | 46 | | the 1986-1987 Raymond Berry Football Classic; in addition, he |
---|
47 | 47 | | enjoyed his affiliation with the Lamar County A&M Club, serving as |
---|
48 | 48 | | its president from 1987 to 1988, and was involved in the Texas A&M |
---|
49 | 49 | | Letterman's Association and the Association of Former Students |
---|
50 | 50 | | Century Club; and |
---|
51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, A member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. |
---|
52 | 52 | | Campbell was a loving family man who placed civic responsibility |
---|
53 | 53 | | above personal interest, and though he will be deeply missed, he |
---|
54 | 54 | | will always be remembered with great affection and admiration; now, |
---|
55 | 55 | | therefore, be it |
---|
56 | 56 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
57 | 57 | | hereby pay tribute to the life of Herbert Hugh Campbell and extend |
---|
58 | 58 | | sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Mary Ann |
---|
59 | 59 | | Campbell; to his daughter, Rebecca Anne Campbell, to his |
---|
60 | 60 | | son-in-law, Chester Page; to his stepdaughter, Rebecca Ann Waldron, |
---|
61 | 61 | | to his son-in-law, Sean Robert Waldron; to his grandchildren, |
---|
62 | 62 | | August Rain and Patrick Clover Waldron and Ariah Lee Holland-Page; |

63 | 63 | | to his sisters, Phyllis Jean Locke and her husband, Weldon, and |
