5	5	CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
6	6	WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at
7	7	the tragic death of James Michael Grant of Gatesville on September
8	8	15, 2007, at the age of 44; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Michael Grant was born in Denton to Garnett and
10	10	Nancy Grant on May 23, 1963; he graduated from Gatesville High
11	11	School in 1981 and went on to attend Southwest Texas State
12	12	University; he later became an integral part of the family
13	13	business, including operating Grant's Bar & Grill in Copperas Cove
14	14	for more than 10 years; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Possessing a natural love of learning, Mr. Grant
16	16	eagerly consumed knowledge of history and politics and delighted in
17	17	the family pastime of political debate; moreover, he was an avid
18	18	reader whose goal it was to read all of the great books; equally
19	19	comfortable with hands-on pursuits, he had a knack for building and
20	20	repairing things, and he was a gifted writer and artist; his
21	21	multifaceted interests also included star gazing at the top of
22	22	Grant's Mountain, hunting, camping, football, guns, and cars; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Mr. Grant further distinguished himself as a
24	24	dedicated and loving father who worked hard to provide a good home
25	25	for his children; with his genuine love of life and his generosity
26	26	toward others, he set an inspiring example for his daughters, Jana
27	27	and Kate, and their remarkable achievements since his passing are
28	28	due in no small part to the foundation he laid for them while he was
29	29	alive; and
30	30	WHEREAS, His oldest daughter, Jana Ramsey Grant, is a
31	31	graduating senior at Comanche High School, where she was not only
32	32	named class favorite both her junior and senior years, but she was
33	33	also selected as the 2008-2009 homecoming queen; in addition, she
34	34	has participated in such UIL events as literary criticism, prose,
35	35	poetry, and one-act play, for which she earned Honorable Mention
36	36	All-Star Cast, and she is a member of the cheerleading squad;
37	37	outside of school, she gives back to her fellow residents through
38	38	her involvement in the faith-based group Community Rehab; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Kate Grant is a straight-A student in the gifted and
40	40	talented program at Decatur Intermediate School and was an
41	41	award-winning participant in the FFA food project at the Wise
42	42	County Youth Fair; when she is not studying, she spends much of her
43	43	time practicing for the Quest Aquatics Swim Team, and she plans to
44	44	participate in track and field, cross-country, and volleyball at
45	45	Decatur Middle School next year; moreover, she has explored public
46	46	service as an honorary sergeant in the Texas House of
47	47	Representatives and as a student scholar in Senator Kip Averitt's
48	48	office; and
49	49	WHEREAS, Mr. Grant would no doubt beam with pride to see these
50	50	talented young women today; left in his stead to share in the
51	51	pleasure of their accomplishments are his father, Garnett Grant,
52	52	and his siblings, Shelton and Kathy Grant; Michael Grant was the
53	53	rock of his close-knit family, and it is only fitting that they are
54	54	in turn providing such stability, encouragement, and guidance for
55	55	his cherished daughters; and
56	56	WHEREAS, Michael Grant would have turned 46 years old on May
57	57	23, 2009, a day that will forever hold special meaning for those
58	58	closest to him; although his many friends and loved ones have
59	59	experienced tremendous grief in the wake of his death, they may take
60	60	comfort in knowing that he embraced life to the fullest and brought
61	61	immeasurable joy to countless people during his years on this
62	62	earth; now, therefore, be it
63	63	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
64	64	hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Michael Grant and extend
65	65	sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughters,
66	66	Jana Ramsey Grant and Kate Grant; to his father, Garnett Grant; to
67	67	his brother, Shelton Grant; to his sister, Kathy Grant; to his
68	68	companion, Cheri Lock Tull; and to all who mourn his passing; and,
69	69	be it further
70	70	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
71	71	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
72	72	Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
73	73	Michael Grant.
