55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at
77 the tragic death of James Michael Grant of Gatesville on September
88 15, 2007, at the age of 44; and
99 WHEREAS, Michael Grant was born in Denton to Garnett and
1010 Nancy Grant on May 23, 1963; he graduated from Gatesville High
1111 School in 1981 and went on to attend Southwest Texas State
1212 University; he later became an integral part of the family
1313 business, including operating Grant's Bar & Grill in Copperas Cove
1414 for more than 10 years; and
1515 WHEREAS, Possessing a natural love of learning, Mr. Grant
1616 eagerly consumed knowledge of history and politics and delighted in
1717 the family pastime of political debate; moreover, he was an avid
1818 reader whose goal it was to read all of the great books; equally
1919 comfortable with hands-on pursuits, he had a knack for building and
2020 repairing things, and he was a gifted writer and artist; his
2121 multifaceted interests also included star gazing at the top of
2222 Grant's Mountain, hunting, camping, football, guns, and cars; and
2323 WHEREAS, Mr. Grant further distinguished himself as a
2424 dedicated and loving father who worked hard to provide a good home
2525 for his children; with his genuine love of life and his generosity
2626 toward others, he set an inspiring example for his daughters, Jana
2727 and Kate, and their remarkable achievements since his passing are
2828 due in no small part to the foundation he laid for them while he was
2929 alive; and
3030 WHEREAS, His oldest daughter, Jana Ramsey Grant, is a
3131 graduating senior at Comanche High School, where she was not only
3232 named class favorite both her junior and senior years, but she was
3333 also selected as the 2008-2009 homecoming queen; in addition, she
3434 has participated in such UIL events as literary criticism, prose,
3535 poetry, and one-act play, for which she earned Honorable Mention
3636 All-Star Cast, and she is a member of the cheerleading squad;
3737 outside of school, she gives back to her fellow residents through
3838 her involvement in the faith-based group Community Rehab; and
3939 WHEREAS, Kate Grant is a straight-A student in the gifted and
4040 talented program at Decatur Intermediate School and was an
4141 award-winning participant in the FFA food project at the Wise
4242 County Youth Fair; when she is not studying, she spends much of her
4343 time practicing for the Quest Aquatics Swim Team, and she plans to
4444 participate in track and field, cross-country, and volleyball at
4545 Decatur Middle School next year; moreover, she has explored public
4646 service as an honorary sergeant in the Texas House of
4747 Representatives and as a student scholar in Senator Kip Averitt's
4848 office; and
4949 WHEREAS, Mr. Grant would no doubt beam with pride to see these
5050 talented young women today; left in his stead to share in the
5151 pleasure of their accomplishments are his father, Garnett Grant,
5252 and his siblings, Shelton and Kathy Grant; Michael Grant was the
5353 rock of his close-knit family, and it is only fitting that they are
5454 in turn providing such stability, encouragement, and guidance for
5555 his cherished daughters; and
5656 WHEREAS, Michael Grant would have turned 46 years old on May
5757 23, 2009, a day that will forever hold special meaning for those
5858 closest to him; although his many friends and loved ones have
5959 experienced tremendous grief in the wake of his death, they may take
6060 comfort in knowing that he embraced life to the fullest and brought
6161 immeasurable joy to countless people during his years on this
6262 earth; now, therefore, be it
6363 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
6464 hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Michael Grant and extend
6565 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughters,
6666 Jana Ramsey Grant and Kate Grant; to his father, Garnett Grant; to
6767 his brother, Shelton Grant; to his sister, Kathy Grant; to his
6868 companion, Cheri Lock Tull; and to all who mourn his passing; and,
6969 be it further
7070 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
7171 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
7272 Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
7373 Michael Grant.
