| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Family, friends, and community members are mourning |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the loss of Odessa City Council member Michael Sanchez, who died on |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | March 18, 2009, at the age of 40; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mike Sanchez was born in Wichita Falls on November |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 15, 1968, and was a 1987 graduate of Odessa High School, where he |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | was a member of the National Honor Society and a competitive member |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | of the golf team; he went on to attend Odessa College, Texas Tech |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | University, and The University of Texas at Austin; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 2006, Mr. Sanchez was elected to the Odessa City |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Council for District 5, serving on the Animal Control Advisory |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Board, the Main Street Odessa Board, the Gas Committee, and the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Personnel Policy Committee; in 2008, he was elected as mayor pro |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | tem; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, This compassionate and dedicated public servant |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | committed himself to ensuring affordable housing for the people of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Odessa, and he played an instrumental role in gaining tax credits |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | for the Key West Senior Village; he also helped revise the city's |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | personnel policies and procedures manual; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sanchez was active with the Texas Municipal |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | League, and he was a member of the TML's Association of Hispanic |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Municipal Officials, becoming the organization's treasurer in |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | 2007; he was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Church; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Above all, Mike Sanchez was a loving father to his |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | daughters, Marissa, Mariela, and Marisol, teaching them how to ride |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | a bicycle and how to drive, supporting their school activities, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | introducing them to Aggies football, and taking them on trips |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | around the state and across the nation; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Although he was taken much too soon, Mike Sanchez |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | leaves behind him a legacy of public service, compassion for |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | others, and devotion to family, and his memory will forever be held |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | close in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | therefore, be it |

| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

| 40 | 40 | | hereby pay tribute to the life of Michael Sanchez and extend sincere |

| 41 | 41 | | condolences to the members of his family: to his daughters, Marissa |

| 42 | 42 | | Sanchez, Marisol Sanchez, and Mariela Sanchez; to his father, Angel |

| 43 | 43 | | Sanchez; to his mother, Diana Chavez, and her husband, Raymond; to |
