55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Family, friends, and community members are mourning
77 the loss of Odessa City Council member Michael Sanchez, who died on
88 March 18, 2009, at the age of 40; and
99 WHEREAS, Mike Sanchez was born in Wichita Falls on November
1010 15, 1968, and was a 1987 graduate of Odessa High School, where he
1111 was a member of the National Honor Society and a competitive member
1212 of the golf team; he went on to attend Odessa College, Texas Tech
1313 University, and The University of Texas at Austin; and
1414 WHEREAS, In 2006, Mr. Sanchez was elected to the Odessa City
1515 Council for District 5, serving on the Animal Control Advisory
1616 Board, the Main Street Odessa Board, the Gas Committee, and the
1717 Personnel Policy Committee; in 2008, he was elected as mayor pro
1818 tem; and
1919 WHEREAS, This compassionate and dedicated public servant
2020 committed himself to ensuring affordable housing for the people of
2121 Odessa, and he played an instrumental role in gaining tax credits
2222 for the Key West Senior Village; he also helped revise the city's
2323 personnel policies and procedures manual; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Sanchez was active with the Texas Municipal
2525 League, and he was a member of the TML's Association of Hispanic
2626 Municipal Officials, becoming the organization's treasurer in
2727 2007; he was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic
2828 Church; and
2929 WHEREAS, Above all, Mike Sanchez was a loving father to his
3030 daughters, Marissa, Mariela, and Marisol, teaching them how to ride
3131 a bicycle and how to drive, supporting their school activities,
3232 introducing them to Aggies football, and taking them on trips
3333 around the state and across the nation; and
3434 WHEREAS, Although he was taken much too soon, Mike Sanchez
3535 leaves behind him a legacy of public service, compassion for
3636 others, and devotion to family, and his memory will forever be held
3737 close in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him; now,
3838 therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
4040 hereby pay tribute to the life of Michael Sanchez and extend sincere
4141 condolences to the members of his family: to his daughters, Marissa
4242 Sanchez, Marisol Sanchez, and Mariela Sanchez; to his father, Angel
4343 Sanchez; to his mother, Diana Chavez, and her husband, Raymond; to
4444 his grandmother, Mary Cadena; to his sister, Monica Sanchez; to his
4545 brother, Steve Chavez; to his stepsister, Reisa Chavez; to his
4646 stepbrothers, Raymond Chavez, Jr., and Paul Chavez; to his aunts,
4747 Olga Quiroz, Annabelle Sanchez, Gracie Cadena, Mary Cooper, and
4848 Cecilia Kennedy; to his uncles, John Joe Cadena, Ray Sanchez, Joe
4949 Sanchez, Johnny Sanchez, Mike Sanchez, and Rudy Sanchez; and to his
5050 other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5252 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5353 Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
5454 Michael Sanchez.
