6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, In 1979, the 66th Texas Legislature established the |
---|
7 | 7 | | Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG) as a public, |
---|
8 | 8 | | nonprofit corporation to "(1) administer a guaranteed student loan |
---|
9 | 9 | | program to assist qualified Texas students in receiving a |
---|
10 | 10 | | postsecondary education in this state or elsewhere in the nation; |
---|
11 | 11 | | and (2) provide necessary and desirable services related to the |
---|
12 | 12 | | loan program, including cooperative awareness efforts with |
---|
13 | 13 | | appropriate educational and civic associations designed to |
---|
14 | 14 | | disseminate postsecondary education awareness information, |
---|
15 | 15 | | including information regarding student financial aid and the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Federal Family Education Loan Program, and other relevant topics |
---|
17 | 17 | | including the prevention of student loan default"; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Federal Family Education Loan Program is the |
---|
19 | 19 | | largest source of student financial aid in Texas, accounting for |
---|
20 | 20 | | approximately two-thirds of the direct student financial aid |
---|
21 | 21 | | awarded to Texas higher education students; in addition to |
---|
22 | 22 | | successfully administering the largest student financial aid |
---|
23 | 23 | | program in the state, TG provides a variety of necessary and |
---|
24 | 24 | | desirable student, family, and school-related services that |
---|
25 | 25 | | support access to postsecondary education at no cost to the state |
---|
26 | 26 | | and that are fully exportable to other federal postsecondary |
---|
27 | 27 | | educational loan programs; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation |
---|
29 | 29 | | merits continued support, given the ongoing need for the range of |
---|
30 | 30 | | services provided to students, schools, and families considering or |
---|
31 | 31 | | receiving financial aid under federal programs; now, therefore, be |
---|
32 | 32 | | it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
34 | 34 | | hereby recognize the vital importance of continuing support for the |
---|
35 | 35 | | Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation and its mission and |
---|
36 | 36 | | direct TG to seek out opportunities to maintain an ongoing role in |
---|
37 | 37 | | administering the Federal Family Education Loan Program or other |
---|
38 | 38 | | federal student loan programs; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward an |
---|
40 | 40 | | official copy of this resolution to the president and chief |
---|
41 | 41 | | executive officer of the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation. |
