55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, In 1979, the 66th Texas Legislature established the
77 Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG) as a public,
88 nonprofit corporation to "(1) administer a guaranteed student loan
99 program to assist qualified Texas students in receiving a
1010 postsecondary education in this state or elsewhere in the nation;
1111 and (2) provide necessary and desirable services related to the
1212 loan program, including cooperative awareness efforts with
1313 appropriate educational and civic associations designed to
1414 disseminate postsecondary education awareness information,
1515 including information regarding student financial aid and the
1616 Federal Family Education Loan Program, and other relevant topics
1717 including the prevention of student loan default"; and
1818 WHEREAS, The Federal Family Education Loan Program is the
1919 largest source of student financial aid in Texas, accounting for
2020 approximately two-thirds of the direct student financial aid
2121 awarded to Texas higher education students; in addition to
2222 successfully administering the largest student financial aid
2323 program in the state, TG provides a variety of necessary and
2424 desirable student, family, and school-related services that
2525 support access to postsecondary education at no cost to the state
2626 and that are fully exportable to other federal postsecondary
2727 educational loan programs; and
2828 WHEREAS, The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation
2929 merits continued support, given the ongoing need for the range of
3030 services provided to students, schools, and families considering or
3131 receiving financial aid under federal programs; now, therefore, be
3232 it
3333 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
3434 hereby recognize the vital importance of continuing support for the
3535 Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation and its mission and
3636 direct TG to seek out opportunities to maintain an ongoing role in
3737 administering the Federal Family Education Loan Program or other
3838 federal student loan programs; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward an
4040 official copy of this resolution to the president and chief
4141 executive officer of the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation.
