55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, February 6, 2009, marks the 98th anniversary of the
77 birth of Ronald Reagan, and this date provides a welcome
88 opportunity to honor the legacy of the nation's 40th president; and
99 WHEREAS, Born in 1911 in Tampico, Illinois, Ronald Wilson
1010 Reagan first made his name as a film actor and later became
1111 president of the Screen Actors Guild; in 1966, he was elected
1212 governor of California, and ably served in that office until 1975;
1313 and
1414 WHEREAS, Following his victory in the 1980 presidential
1515 election, Mr. Reagan began his tenure as the nation's chief
1616 executive; faced with a range of daunting challenges that included
1717 high unemployment, inflation, and the ongoing cold war with the
1818 Soviet Union, he introduced a bold agenda that emphasized economic
1919 growth and lower taxes along with the establishment of a strong
2020 national defense; the success of President Reagan's initiatives
2121 helped renew the nation's self-confidence, and in 1984 he was
2222 elected to a second term, winning office by one of the largest
2323 margins in the history of presidential elections; and
2424 WHEREAS, The president's final four years in office were
2525 highlighted by his efforts to bring about a major revision of the
2626 tax code and his continuing efforts to champion government
2727 accountability; moreover, U.S. forces were used to target
2828 international terrorism as part of the president's quest to achieve
2929 "peace through strength"; this same initiative led to important
3030 breakthroughs in U.S.-Soviet relations and contributed to the
3131 ultimate downfall of the U.S.S.R.; and
3232 WHEREAS, A legendary president who helped lead the nation
3333 through a period of dramatic change and expanding prosperity,
3434 Ronald Reagan had a positive and enduring influence on the course of
3535 U.S. history, and it is indeed appropriate to reflect on his
3636 admirable service to his fellow citizens on the anniversary of his
3737 birth; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
3939 hereby declare February 6, 2009, as Ronald Reagan Day.
