55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Transit Association are
77 visiting the State Capitol on February 24, 2009; and
88 WHEREAS, Founded in 1986 to promote public transportation,
99 the TTA is a nonprofit professional corporation composed of 8
1010 metropolitan transit authorities, 30 small urban transit
1111 districts, and 39 rural transit districts from throughout Texas,
1212 with public and private entities from across the country holding
1313 associate membership; and
1414 WHEREAS, The TTA promotes public transportation through its
1515 monthly newsletter and its annual conference and expo; in 2002, the
1616 association created the Texas Transit Foundation, a nonprofit
1717 educational organization whose mission is to promote public
1818 transportation, conduct research on public policy and other issues,
1919 and provide professional development opportunities for those
2020 involved in the public transportation industry; and
2121 WHEREAS, The work of this notable organization benefits many
2222 Texans who rely on public transportation as their primary means of
2323 getting to work, school, medical appointments, and myriad other
2424 activities; communities also profit immeasurably from public
2525 transportation in terms of job creation and the reduction of
2626 traffic and environmental impact, thereby enhancing quality of life
2727 for residents; moreover, public transportation systems are
2828 integral to a community's ability to deal with disasters, as
2929 evidenced by their vital assistance to victims of Hurricanes Gustav
3030 and Ike; and
3131 WHEREAS, Public transportation makes it possible for a host
3232 of Americans to engage more fully in life, even as it fosters
3333 economic development, more livable communities, and cleaner air,
3434 and for more than two decades the TTA has supported the needs of the
3535 state's public transportation systems through advocacy and
3636 education; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
3838 hereby designate February 24, 2009, as Texas Transit Association
3939 Day at the State Capitol.
