| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Transit Association are |

| 7 | 7 | | visiting the State Capitol on February 24, 2009; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1986 to promote public transportation, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the TTA is a nonprofit professional corporation composed of 8 |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | metropolitan transit authorities, 30 small urban transit |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | districts, and 39 rural transit districts from throughout Texas, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | with public and private entities from across the country holding |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | associate membership; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The TTA promotes public transportation through its |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | monthly newsletter and its annual conference and expo; in 2002, the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | association created the Texas Transit Foundation, a nonprofit |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | educational organization whose mission is to promote public |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | transportation, conduct research on public policy and other issues, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and provide professional development opportunities for those |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | involved in the public transportation industry; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The work of this notable organization benefits many |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Texans who rely on public transportation as their primary means of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | getting to work, school, medical appointments, and myriad other |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | activities; communities also profit immeasurably from public |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | transportation in terms of job creation and the reduction of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | traffic and environmental impact, thereby enhancing quality of life |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | for residents; moreover, public transportation systems are |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | integral to a community's ability to deal with disasters, as |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | evidenced by their vital assistance to victims of Hurricanes Gustav |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and Ike; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Public transportation makes it possible for a host |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | of Americans to engage more fully in life, even as it fosters |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | economic development, more livable communities, and cleaner air, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | and for more than two decades the TTA has supported the needs of the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | state's public transportation systems through advocacy and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | education; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | hereby designate February 24, 2009, as Texas Transit Association |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Day at the State Capitol. |
