8 | 8 | BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
9 | 9 | SECTION 1. Article VIII, Texas Constitution, is amended by | |
10 | 10 | adding Section 1-e-1 to read as follows: | |
11 | 11 | Sec. 1-e-1. Notwithstanding any other law, beginning on | |
12 | 12 | January 1, 2014, a political subdivision of this state may not levy | |
13 | 13 | an ad valorem tax for the purpose of maintaining an efficient system | |
14 | 14 | of public free schools. | |
15 | 15 | SECTION 2. This proposed constitutional amendment shall be | |
16 | 16 | submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 3, 2009. | |
17 | 17 | The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the | |
18 | 18 | proposition: "The constitutional amendment to abolish school | |
19 | 19 | district maintenance and operations ad valorem taxes beginning on | |
20 | 20 | January 1, 2014, in order that the legislature may enact a fairer | |
21 | 21 | system of fully funding public education." |
