44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Westwood Junior High School in Dallas was awarded
66 "Recognized" status by the Texas Education Agency in 2008; and
77 WHEREAS, To ensure that all students in Texas benefit from
88 the highest standards of education, the TEA instituted an
99 accountability rating system for the state's public schools and
1010 districts; a campus gains "Recognized" status if at least 75
1111 percent of its students pass each of the Texas Assessment of
1212 Knowledge and Skills subject area tests, and in 2008, only 34
1313 percent of all schools earned this distinction; and
1414 WHEREAS, Westwood is the Richardson Independent School
1515 District's Math, Science, and Leadership Magnet and has earned
1616 "Recognized" status every year since 2004; providing instruction
1717 for youth in grades seven and eight, the school currently has an
1818 enrollment of approximately 640 students who develop their skills
1919 and knowledge in such programs as the RISD/Texas Instruments Math
2020 Initiative, the Science Olympiad, and Advancement Via Individual
2121 Determination; guided by principal Peggy Dillon, the faculty and
2222 staff strive to help their pupils realize their full potential; and
2323 WHEREAS, The teachers and students of Westwood Junior High
2424 School have demonstrated outstanding dedication and perseverance
2525 in their pursuit of academic excellence, and they may indeed take
2626 justifiable pride in the accolade their school has received from
2727 the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2929 Legislature hereby honor Westwood Junior High School on its
3030 achievement of a "Recognized" rating from the Texas Education
3131 Agency in 2008 and extend to its students, teachers, and staff
3232 sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3434 prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3535 House of Representatives.
