5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Westwood Junior High School in Dallas was awarded |

6 | 6 | | "Recognized" status by the Texas Education Agency in 2008; and |

7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, To ensure that all students in Texas benefit from |
---|
8 | 8 | | the highest standards of education, the TEA instituted an |
---|
9 | 9 | | accountability rating system for the state's public schools and |
---|
10 | 10 | | districts; a campus gains "Recognized" status if at least 75 |
---|
11 | 11 | | percent of its students pass each of the Texas Assessment of |
---|
12 | 12 | | Knowledge and Skills subject area tests, and in 2008, only 34 |
---|
13 | 13 | | percent of all schools earned this distinction; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Westwood is the Richardson Independent School |
---|
15 | 15 | | District's Math, Science, and Leadership Magnet and has earned |
---|
16 | 16 | | "Recognized" status every year since 2004; providing instruction |
---|
17 | 17 | | for youth in grades seven and eight, the school currently has an |
---|
18 | 18 | | enrollment of approximately 640 students who develop their skills |
---|
19 | 19 | | and knowledge in such programs as the RISD/Texas Instruments Math |
---|
20 | 20 | | Initiative, the Science Olympiad, and Advancement Via Individual |
---|
21 | 21 | | Determination; guided by principal Peggy Dillon, the faculty and |
---|
22 | 22 | | staff strive to help their pupils realize their full potential; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The teachers and students of Westwood Junior High |
---|
24 | 24 | | School have demonstrated outstanding dedication and perseverance |
---|
25 | 25 | | in their pursuit of academic excellence, and they may indeed take |
---|
26 | 26 | | justifiable pride in the accolade their school has received from |
---|
27 | 27 | | the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
---|
28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby honor Westwood Junior High School on its |
---|
30 | 30 | | achievement of a "Recognized" rating from the Texas Education |
---|
31 | 31 | | Agency in 2008 and extend to its students, teachers, and staff |

32 | 32 | | sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |

33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
