| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, M. D. Williams Elementary School in Garland was |

| 6 | 6 | | awarded "Recognized" status by the Texas Education Agency in 2008; |
|---|

|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, To ensure that all students in Texas benefit from |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the highest standards of education, the TEA instituted an |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | accountability rating system for the state's public schools and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | districts; a campus gains "Recognized" status if at least 75 |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | percent of its students pass each of the Texas Assessment of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Knowledge and Skills subject area tests, and in 2008, only 34 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | percent of all schools earned this distinction; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Led by principal Ellen Mooney, Williams Elementary |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | has achieved "Recognized" status each year since 2005; it has |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | served central Garland for more than a half-century and many of its |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | alumni are respected and successful members of the community; |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Williams Elementary today has an enrollment of approximately 315 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | students who benefit by instruction from a faculty recognized for |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | its skill and commitment; most recently, fifth grade mathematics |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | teacher Arezou Laridjani won an area competition to inspire |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | students by connecting math to everyday life, and special education |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | teacher Angela Brannon was chosen Teacher of the Month for January |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | 2009 by Garland Power and Light; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The teachers and students of M. D. Williams |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Elementary School have demonstrated outstanding dedication and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | perseverance in their pursuit of academic excellence, and they may |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | indeed take justifiable pride in the accolade their school has |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | received from the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby honor M. D. Williams Elementary School on its |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | achievement of a "Recognized" rating from the Texas Education |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Agency in 2008 and extend to its students, teachers, and staff |

| 35 | 35 | | sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |

| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
