H.R. No. 1025 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A quality education is the foundation of future success, and Sam Houston Middle School provides students of the Garland Independent School District with a well-rounded academic curriculum and opportunities to develop their individual skills and talents; and WHEREAS, Established in 1960, Sam Houston Middle School today has an enrollment of approximately 775 students; the school welcomed a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society in 2007 with great enthusiasm, and its members have continued to demonstrate the accomplishment, leadership, and good character required for membership; NJHS members have given back to their community as well through such activities as a penny drive for a local elementary school; and WHEREAS, Other special programs at Houston Middle School include the Youth Achievement Foundation and Academic Pentathlon, as well as the Colt of the Six Weeks award, which commends outstanding diligence and exemplary behavior; new in the 2008-2009 school year is the Advancement Via Individual Determination college preparation program; and WHEREAS, Led by principal Don Hernandez, the school's dedicated faculty and staff carry out the Houston mission "to create a safe, positive environment where teachers, administrators, and parents work together to empower every student to recognize his/her potential and take advantage of opportunities to achieve success"; they motivate students to work industriously toward their goals, mastering the new skills and acquiring the knowledge they need to progress to the next level; the faculty, staff, and administrators of Houston Middle School can indeed take pride in this fine institution and its role in preparing children to become happy and productive citizens of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize Sam Houston Middle School in Garland for its contributions to the community and extend to its students, teachers, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
