5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A quality education is the foundation of future |

6 | 6 | | success, and Sam Houston Middle School provides students of the |

7 | 7 | | Garland Independent School District with a well-rounded academic |
---|
8 | 8 | | curriculum and opportunities to develop their individual skills and |
---|
9 | 9 | | talents; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1960, Sam Houston Middle School today |
---|
11 | 11 | | has an enrollment of approximately 775 students; the school |
---|
12 | 12 | | welcomed a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society in 2007 with |
---|
13 | 13 | | great enthusiasm, and its members have continued to demonstrate the |
---|
14 | 14 | | accomplishment, leadership, and good character required for |
---|
15 | 15 | | membership; NJHS members have given back to their community as well |
---|
16 | 16 | | through such activities as a penny drive for a local elementary |
---|
17 | 17 | | school; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Other special programs at Houston Middle School |
---|
19 | 19 | | include the Youth Achievement Foundation and Academic Pentathlon, |
---|
20 | 20 | | as well as the Colt of the Six Weeks award, which commends |
---|
21 | 21 | | outstanding diligence and exemplary behavior; new in the 2008-2009 |
---|
22 | 22 | | school year is the Advancement Via Individual Determination college |
---|
23 | 23 | | preparation program; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Led by principal Don Hernandez, the school's |
---|
25 | 25 | | dedicated faculty and staff carry out the Houston mission "to |
---|
26 | 26 | | create a safe, positive environment where teachers, |
---|
27 | 27 | | administrators, and parents work together to empower every student |
---|
28 | 28 | | to recognize his/her potential and take advantage of opportunities |
---|
29 | 29 | | to achieve success"; they motivate students to work industriously |
---|
30 | 30 | | toward their goals, mastering the new skills and acquiring the |
---|
31 | 31 | | knowledge they need to progress to the next level; the faculty, |
---|
32 | 32 | | staff, and administrators of Houston Middle School can indeed take |
---|
33 | 33 | | pride in this fine institution and its role in preparing children to |
---|
34 | 34 | | become happy and productive citizens of the Lone Star State; now, |

36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby recognize Sam Houston Middle School in Garland |
