| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Cecilia Guthrie Boone has been selected as the 2009 |

| 6 | 6 | | recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Award by the League of Women |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Voters of Dallas Education Fund; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Kentucky, Cecilia Boone moved to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Indiana, Ohio, and Texas as an employee of IBM; settling in the Lone |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Star State, she married her husband, Garrett, and they shared the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | joy of welcoming three children, Aimee, Katherine, and Guthrie into |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | their family; in 1978, the couple, together with their business |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | partners, launched The Container Store, which Mr. Boone continues |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | to serve as chairman emeritus; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In addition to meeting her career and family |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | responsibilities, Mrs. Boone has dedicated countless hours to her |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | community, focusing on programs for women; she served as president |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of the board of Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas, and she |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | was affiliated with Planned Parenthood of North Texas and Annie's |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | List, a group that encourages women to seek statewide office; in |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 2006, she held the position of president of the board for the Dallas |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Women's Foundation, supporting the organization's mission to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | promote philanthropy and to help women and girls realize their full |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | potential; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, This generous civic leader is the chair of the Boone |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Family Foundation, and she remains involved in numerous local |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | organizations, including the Dallas Assembly and the Dallas Summit, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and the KERA North Texas Public Broadcasting board; Mrs. Boone is |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | also active on the board of the Dallas County Community Colleges |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Foundation, Inc., and she assisted with the expansion of the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | DCCCD's Rising Star Scholarship Program to serve more students, the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | majority of whom are the first members in their families to attend |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | college; moreover, she is an adjunct faculty member at the Center on |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Philanthropy at Indiana University and a member of the Women's |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Leadership Board of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government; and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, A champion for the empowerment of young girls and |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | women, Cecilia Boone is committed to improving the quality of life |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | for many Texans, and her selfless efforts inspire all those who are |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Cecilia Guthrie Boone on her |

| 42 | 42 | | receipt of the 2009 Susan B. Anthony Award from the League of Women |
