5	5	WHEREAS, Family, friends, and parishioners are mourning the
6	6	loss of Monsignor Edward J. Dokupil of Bastrop, who died on January
7	7	18, 2009, at the age of 72; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Edward Dokupil was born on October 31, 1936, in
9	9	Burlington to Willie Frank and Angela Ermis Dokupil; after
10	10	graduating from Rosebud High School, he entered St. Mary's Seminary
11	11	in Houston, where he earned his college degree and then pursued
12	12	another four years of theological studies; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Monsignor Dokupil was ordained as a Catholic priest
14	14	in 1964, and after serving as associate pastor at Cristo Rey
15	15	Catholic Church in Austin, he went on to pastor Immaculate
16	16	Conception Church in Sealy, St. Mary's Catholic Church of the
17	17	Assumption in Waco, Church of the Assumption in West, and Sacred
18	18	Heart Church in Austin; and
19	19	WHEREAS, In 1972, Monsignor Dokupil became the pastor of
20	20	Ascension Parish in Bastrop, where he was an inspiring spiritual
21	21	leader and mentor for 37 years; over the course of his pastorate,
22	22	the membership of the church increased from 100 to more than 1,000
23	23	families, and he created a Spanish Mass for the area's growing
24	24	Hispanic population; at the time of his death, he was making plans
25	25	for the building of a parish activity center; and
26	26	WHEREAS, While he was at Sacred Heart in Austin and Ascension
27	27	Parish in Bastrop, Monsignor Dokupil also served as the Catholic
28	28	chaplain at the Travis State School for 28 years and at Holy Cross
29	29	High School for Girls for three years; moreover, he was cofounder of
30	30	the Crisis Hotline in Austin and a member of its board of directors,
31	31	and he served as chaplain for the Bastrop Police Department; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Monsignor Dokupil was a leader in the governance of
33	33	the church as well; he held a seat on the Diocesan Presbyteral
34	34	Council, and he served as a Diocesan Consultor and as the Bishop's
35	35	Dean of the Southern Deanery of the Diocese of Austin; in 2001, he
36	36	was granted the title of monsignor by His Holiness, Pope John Paul
37	37	II; and
38	38	WHEREAS, A caring and compassionate man, Monsignor Edward J.
39	39	Dokupil was beloved by all who knew him for his strength, his
40	40	wisdom, and his good counsel, and he will be remembered forever for
41	41	the unfailing love and dedication he showed to his community; now,
42	42	therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
44	44	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Monsignor Edward J.
45	45	Dokupil and extend sincere condolences to the members of his
46	46	family: to his sister, RosaLee Wilkerson, and her husband, George;
47	47	to his brothers, Tom Dokupil and his wife, Debbie, Bob Dokupil and
48	48	his wife, Grace, Charles Dokupil and his wife, Ann, and William
49	49	Dokupil and his wife, Mildred; to his eight nieces and four nephews;
50	50	and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
51	51	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
52	52	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
53	53	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Monsignor
54	54	Dokupil.
