 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and
 Scholarships held its largest annual fund-raiser, the 2009 VAMOS
 Golf Tournament, in February 2009, and this significant event is
 playing an instrumental role in helping many deserving young Texans
 to pursue their goal of obtaining a higher education; and
 WHEREAS, Projected to raise over $700,000 toward
 scholarships for Hispanic students in the Rio Grande Valley this
 year, the tournament has brought in more than $4 million over the
 course of the past 13 years for the VAMOS scholarship and mentoring
 program; and
 WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1996, VAMOS has helped
 approximately 250 students with tuition, books, and other expenses;
 scholarship recipients are awarded between $8,000 and $20,000 while
 pursuing their undergraduate course work, and community service
 projects are required for all participants; and
 WHEREAS, The education of Texas youth is of vital importance
 to the future of the Lone Star State, and VAMOS opens doors to
 higher learning for high school students while providing them with
 the motivation and encouragement they need to succeed in college
 and beyond; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby honor the Valley Alliance of Mentors for
 Opportunities and Scholarships for its notable work in behalf of
 Hispanic students in the Rio Grande Valley and extend to all those
 affiliated with the alliance sincere best wishes for continued
 success; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for VAMOS as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
