44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
66 a close when Amos James Evans of Port Arthur died on February 12,
77 2009, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, Amos Evans was born in Louisiana on May 11, 1922, to
99 Charlie and Florence Evans; he was a student at Acadian Parish
1010 Training School, where he participated in the band, the boxing
1111 team, and the basketball team, and he later attended LaSalle
1212 Business Correspondence Institute; answering his nation's call to
1313 duty, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; and
1414 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Evans settled in Port Arthur and
1515 went to work as an operator at the Gulf Oil refinery; he retired
1616 after 37 years of service with the company; and
1717 WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Evans was a champion for
1818 civil rights, social justice, and equal opportunity in his
1919 community; the youth director of the local chapter of the NAACP, he
2020 served on its membership committee and developed a Saturday reading
2121 program for children at the chapter headquarters; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Evans was also active in his community as
2323 president of the PTA and as a member of the Valero Community
2424 Advisory Panel and the Port Arthur Industry and Community Leaders
2525 Advisory Group; moreover, he served on the boards of the YMCA and
2626 the Port Arthur Housing Authority; and
2727 WHEREAS, A man of strong religious faith, he was a member of
2828 St. Paul United Methodist Church for 68 years and served his
2929 congregation as a lay leader, a trustee, president of the choir, and
3030 Sunday school superintendent and teacher; and
3131 WHEREAS, Mr. Evans received numerous accolades through the
3232 years, including the Congressional Community Award, the American
3333 Institute for Public Service Jefferson Award, the Unsung Hero
3434 Award, and an entry in Who's Who Among Black Americans; he was also
3535 recognized by such organizations as Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the
3636 Golden Triangle Coalition of Black Democrats, and the Golden Gate
3737 Social and Civic Club, among many others; and
3838 WHEREAS, This caring and compassionate gentleman dedicated
3939 himself to serving others and to upholding the principles of
4040 equality and justice in which he believed, and he leaves behind an
4141 inspiring legacy of achievement that his loved ones can remember
4242 with pride; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4444 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Amos James Evans and
4545 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4646 wife, Carolyn Simon Evans; to his daughter, Winnifred Evans-Barker;
4747 to his sons, Karim Abdullah and his wife, Hanneefah, Muhammad
4848 Abdullah and his wife, Helena, and Wendell Evans; to his
4949 granddaughters, Nadria Turner, Yhana Comeaux, Dichel Gant, Karima
5050 Rice, Rhonda Thomas, Hana Abdullah, Halimah Price, Donna Powell,
5151 and Iona Eaglin; to his grandsons, Morris Abdullah, Musemah Rashad
5252 Abdullah, Adonis Evans, Wesley Evans, and Lawrence Augustine; to
5353 his sister-in-law, Phyllis Morris, and her husband, William; to his
5454 sister, Nettie Wycoff Evans; to his brother, George Evans, and his
5555 wife, Pearline; to his nephew, Brian Harrison; to his 20
5656 great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and many friends;
5757 and, be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5959 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
6060 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Amos James
6161 Evans.
