55 WHEREAS, The citizens of Gregg County are celebrating the
66 rich history of their community with Dalton Days and the Mowdown
77 Showdown on April 11, 2009, in Longview; and
88 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the city's Cultural Activities
99 Advisory Commission with proceeds benefiting the Gregg County
1010 Historical Museum, Dalton Days is inspired by the famous bank
1111 robbery in Longview in May 1894; and
1212 WHEREAS, Led by Bill Dalton, the last active member of the
1313 famous Dalton Gang, a group of outlaws held up the First National
1414 Bank; two townspeople and a gang member were killed, and Dalton
1515 himself was shot by lawmen in Oklahoma a few weeks later; and
1616 WHEREAS, The Dalton Days event features three reenactments of
1717 the shootout throughout the day at the Longview Fairgrounds and
1818 Rodeo Arena; visitors will also enjoy the Mowdown Showdown, a
1919 series of lawn mower races sponsored by the Lone Star Mower Racing
2020 Association; live music, vendors, a quick-draw competition, and
2121 pony rides will also add to the high spirits of the event; and
2222 WHEREAS, The citizens of Gregg County may take great pride in
2323 their colorful history, and informative and entertaining
2424 historical festivals like Dalton Days help to bring the past alive
2525 for young and old alike; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2727 Legislature hereby commemorate Dalton Days and the Mowdown Showdown
2828 in Longview and extend to the festival's sponsors, organizers, and
2929 participants sincere best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable
3030 event.
