| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Sherry Cannedy of Wichita Falls has received the |

| 6 | 6 | | 2008 Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award |

| 7 | 7 | | from Humanities Texas; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The state affiliate of the National Endowment for |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the Humanities, the nonprofit Humanities Texas honors one teacher |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of Texas history every year as part of its annual Outstanding |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Teaching Awards; the Texas history award is named in memory of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Linden Heck Howell, a former chair of the organization's board; the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | winning teacher receives $5,000 and his or her school receives $500 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | for the purchase of teaching materials; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Cannedy teaches fourth grade social studies, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | reading, and writing at Southern Hills Elementary in Wichita Falls; |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | she attended Texas Tech University and earned her teaching degree |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | at Midwestern State University; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Known affectionately by her students as "Mrs. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Texas," this dynamic educator sparks interest in Texas history by |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | taking her students on field trips to the State Capitol and the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Alamo and other Spanish missions; she encourages her students to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | share their knowledge of Texas history with their parents; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Cannedy has written and directed a pageant of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Texas history titled "The Spirit of Texas," performed every San |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Jacinto Day by the students at her school; she also shares her love |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | of Texas history as a facilitator for the Lone Star Leadership |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Academy; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, By instilling in her students a deep appreciation of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the history and traditions of the Lone Star State, Ms. Cannedy plays |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | a vital role in the growth of Texas culture, and she indeed merits |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | commendation for the great contribution she is making to her school |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | and her community; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Sherry Cannedy on winning the 2008 |
