5	5	WHEREAS, Cattle have been raised in Texas since the mid-18th
6	6	century when the Spanish established missions; and
7	7	WHEREAS, Beginning in the 1860s, ranching expanded rapidly;
8	8	and
9	9	WHEREAS, The first cattle drives on the legendary Chisholm
10	10	and Goodnight-Loving Trails headed north from Texas toward the
11	11	markets and railheads in Kansas; and
12	12	WHEREAS, After interstate railroads were established in
13	13	Texas during the 1870s, cattle drives to the Midwest became
14	14	unnecessary, and communities such as Fort Worth and Amarillo became
15	15	points where herds were amassed and railed across the United
16	16	States; and
17	17	WHEREAS, The dramatic growth of cattle feeding in Texas,
18	18	beginning in the 1950s, has made our state a leading provider of the
19	19	grain-fed beef desired by consumers around the world, supplying
20	20	almost a third of the nation's fed beef; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Texas is the number one cattle-producing state with
22	22	an inventory of 13.8 million cattle and calves; and
23	23	WHEREAS, The Texas cattle industry contributes almost $8
24	24	billion in cash receipts and has a direct impact of $15 billion to
25	25	the state's economy; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Cattle production accounts for more than 70 percent
27	27	of livestock cash receipts and almost half the total for all
28	28	agriculture products in Texas; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Cattle production has played a prominent role in the
30	30	culture and legacy of Texas; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Texas cattlemen have a proud heritage of animal
32	32	husbandry and land stewardship that continues to be strong today;
33	33	now, therefore, be it
34	34	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
35	35	Legislature hereby honor these dedicated producers and their
36	36	contribution to the economy and culture of our state and recognize
37	37	April 1, 2009, as Texas Cattlemen's Day at the State Capitol.
